is schizophrenia a permanent illness?
Question:
Answers:
it can be treated but not cured..
Other Answers:
no.
statisticly:
1/3 of people with schizophrenia make a full recovery
1/3 of people with schizophrenia make a partial recovery
1/3 of people with schizophrenia only get worse
I've always been told that 1/3 of all people diagnosed schizophrenic will completely recover, 1/3 will be stable on meds, and 1/3 will be seriously and permanently disabled.
2/3 of the time it's permanent, but stable on meds and functional isn't the end of the world-
Most who recover completely do so after their first and generally only severe breakdown. Chronic, becomes permanent.
With medication and psychotherapy, it can be controlled.
The concept of 'curing' schizophrenia is controversial as there are no clear criteria for what might constitute a cure, although some criteria for the remission of symptoms have recently been suggested63. Therefore, antipsychotic drugs are only thought to provide symptomatic relief from the positive symptoms of psychosis.
Prognosis
Prognosis for any particular individual affected by schizophrenia is particularly hard to judge as treatment and access to treatment is continually changing, as new methods become available and medical recommendations change.
One retrospective study has shown that about a third of people make a full recovery, about a third show improvement but not a full recovery, and a third remain ill.42 A more recent study using stricter recovery criteria (i.e. concurrent remission of positive and negative symptoms and specific instances of adequate social / vocational functioning) reported a recovery rate of 13.7%.43
The exact definition of what constitutes a recovery has not been widely defined, however, although criteria have recently been suggested to define a remission in symptoms.63 Therefore, this makes it difficult to give an exact estimate as recovery and remission rates are not always comparable across studies.
Yes, in fact all diagnosed with any mental illness are too.
