Why are people Bulimic or Anorexic?
Question:
Answers:
Many times an eating disorder is an attempt to control SOMEthing in a life that is seemingly out of control. Often times it is a symptom of a serious mental disorder. Other times it is a simple result of low self-esteem and external pressures.
Other Answers:
In my opinion, I believe people are anorexic or bulimic because they lack self esteem and have an untreated mental disorder.
Don't forget to include Compulsive Overeaters in this!
Eating disorders are born out of many things from depression to being the victim of sexual abuse. It is a matter of trying to control at least one aspect of your life when the rest of your life is drastically and painfully out of control.
because they have very low self esteem, and its a mental thing too. they look in the mirror and ALWAYS see something wrong with their bodies. maybe a little pooch on their tummies or their thighs are chunky, when in reality, they are sticks. maybe they had someone very negative in their life, telling them they will never be anything important, or that no one would want them. very sad actually
People are dominated by peer-pressure and will go to extremes to become more acceptable. Princess Di was a victim of Bulimia...as she needed to always look just so. While overweight is unhealthy so is the opposite.
I'm ed-nos (eating disorder not otherwise specified) so i switch between anorexic and bulimic phases.
I think theres lot of reasons i have an eating disorder. I'm not happy with myself, i'm clinically overweight but all i see is fat. I see an ugly, fat person everytime i look in the mirror. Also i'm not happy with myself as a person, i don't feel i deserve to be happy or to live and be liked. Also i suffer from depression.
The main reason i have it i think is i use it as a coping mechanism. I don't know how to cope with my problems in a healthy way, so i take it out on myself by starving or binging then purging. Some people harm themselves, some people abuse drugs or alcohol to cope..but i cope through my eating disorder.
A lot of people believe eating disorders can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Its been shown that a lot of people with ED's produce too much of a "happy hormone" leaving us feeling anxious. Starving and binging helps calm us down.
THE MEDIA!!
Some people just wants to BE anorexic like its a lifestyle or something. And when you've become anorexic at your own will, you'll forget about your other mental illness which u suffer. And that feeling makes u feel better.
because they don't love themselves and they don't believe in themselves. Those people leave up to other peoples expectations. It is sad!
I've always seen it as a control issue...people develop eating disorders because they feel as though it's the only way they can gain control from other people. They think they can't control anything else that's going on in their lives, so they turn inward and use their bodies as a way to manipulate other people and gain some kind of attention (even if that attention is negative). These disorders are also some kind of byproduct of the excesses of American culture; you rarely hear of someone from an impoverished country developing anorexia or bulimia. The obsession this culture has with extreme thinness doesn't help, either; images in the media--particularly for women, but also increasingly for guys, too, feature unrealistically thin people and feed on the sense of inadequacy often underlying eating disorders.
