I have been diagnosed bipolar for about 6 years now, though I was obviously affected by it for 9 prior to that.

It is a chemical imbalance in the brain which results in extremes in moods. I can go to very low lows and very high highs. The symptoms of depression are probably familiar to you, so I won't elaborate, but the manic side is elations and high energy. My mind races with creative thoughts. Before I was diagnosed I kept telling my family that I was doing poorly in school because I had "train-thinking" whereby I could read a paragraph in a book and it would trigger thoughts which had nothing to do with what I was reading. I'd get all the way through the page with my eyes still scanning the material before I'd realize I hadn't actually read a thing. Some people, including myself, can become obsessed with particular thoughts for days, weeks and even months at a time. Sleeplessness is typical and if one is deprived long enough they will go psychotic with hallucinations. I was hospitalized when I went several months philosophising with myself over religion and spiritual matters.

Often, we sufferers are so amazed by our proclivity towards creative thinking that we don't want to take the medication, such as lithium, which tends to slow the process. Nevertheless, in the end, if not medicated, bad things will happen.

Some people have problems handling money in that they spend beyond their ability. I myself wracked up over 20,000 in credit card debt buying Nazi war memorabilia - not that I am a Nazi or anything. I just wanted it.

Some are sexually impulsive. Since marriage I have for the most part learned to deal with that.

People can have delusions of grandeur thinking that they are very important, as did I.

Symptoms manifest themselves in many ways for different folks, but these are the ones I personally have.

being upbeat and happy one minute. Then going off, crazy the next minute. You have no control of your actions, moods or faculties, etc.
