How does one break themselves out of a destructive patern?

Overeating is such a horrible addiction to overcome. If it worked for us like for an alcoholic- and we could just never eat again- I could stop. But unfortunately, you have to eat.
Fist of all, let me suggest to work on the issues from your childhood. Resolving those should help a lot.
And then, you could make notes or keep a journal- write down what you eat. That should keep your hands busy and away from the food/mouth for while- .. No, really.. if you see it written down, it sometimes helps you recognize what you're doing.
And find other things to keep you busy. There are support groups out there- but I found I got worse after a overeater's anonymous meeting- they told me I had no control over my eating so I went home and proved them right. Then I realized that was ridiculous, I did better before I went to the meeting. I'm now diabetic and that helps. I'm forced to make myself eat less to live. When you get to a point where your life depends on it, you can do it. Oh, and at least when you eat- eat healthy.

i would look at this as being your first step, admission that you have a problem. I would look at finding a local OA (overeaters anonymous) meeting. It will help you start a healing process. Good luck and God bless
psychotherapy would be a good idea, it's good you already know what is wrong, but therapy can also teach you ways to deal, and in turn, break the pattern. join a help group, don't worry about it as it will be a very private and descrete group of people. First you've got to talk this out with people with similar experience, your not alone. i don't know you but im positive you can do it because you've asked for help, and thats quite a big step.. gud luck..!
