Crack cocaine, a form of cocaine base, is derived from powder cocaine. Unlike the processing of freebase cocaine, converting powder cocaine into crack cocaine does not involve any flammable solvents. The powder cocaine is simply dissolved in a solution of sodium bicarbonate and water. The solution is boiled and a solid substance separates from the boiling mixture. This solid substance, crack, is removed and allowed to dry. The crack cocaine is then broken or cut into "rocks," each typically weighing from one-tenth to one-half of a gram. One gram of pure powder cocaine will convert to approximately 0.89 grams of crack cocaine. The DEA estimates that crack rocks are between 75% and 90% pure cocaine.

crack is a form of cocaine. Cocaine is either snorted, injected, or smoked (in the form of crack). It might be called crack, because reality is cracked when you're on it. There's a serious risk of overdose, leading to seizures, heart attack, strokes, and death. Repeated use of high doses can lead to a psychotic paranoid state. Cocaine use can cause irregular heartbeats and insomnia. Stress on the heart leads to a higher chance of heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory failure. Heavy users are susceptible to hallucinations and "coke bugs"--the sensation of imaginary insects crawling over the skin. Cocaine and crack use have also been a contributing factor in a number of drownings, car crashes, falls, burns, and suicides.
