how do you know if someone is bi-polar?what to do about it?

Question:
what med's work without weight gain or sexual side effects? If it isn't bi-polar, why would someone be so moody and snap about ever little thing but be so loving in the next min. but then will pout for hours about nothing,i'm confused?

Answers:
Kick him in the balls. If he bites off your ear, or simply smiles as if nothing happens, then he is probably bi-polar.

Other Answers:
it could be bi-polar or it could just be unstable or something else. there are drugs and therapies for many disorders like this. the first step is realizing you have a problem and getting help.
I read the ad in the oprah magzine about bipolar disorder and these are the symptoms: talking too fast, buying things you don't need, sleeping less, spending out of control, racing thoughts, irritable, and flying off the handle. you can find out more at the websites listed below.
whatever you do... dont give them any pot and dont piss them off. every bi polar person Ive ever met is a really big guy...
Here is a research guid.
Flux is the fundamental nature of bipolar disorder. Both within and between individuals with the illness, energy, mood, thought, sleep and activity are among the continually changing biological markers of the disorder. The diagnostic subtypes of bipolar disorder are thus static descriptions--snapshots, perhaps--of an illness in change. Individuals may stay in one subtype or change into another over the course of their illness. The DSM V, to be published in 2011, will likely include further subtyping (Akiskal and Ghaemi, 2006).

There are currently four types of bipolar illness. The DSM-IV-TR details four categories of bipolar disorder, Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymia and Bipolar Disorder NOS (Not Otherwise Specified).

According to the DSM-IV-TR, a diagnosis of bipolar I disorder requires one or more manic or mixed episodes. A depressive episode is not required for a diagnosis of BP I disorder, although the overwhelming majority of people with BP I suffer from them as well.

Bipolar II, the more common but by no means less severe type of the disorder, is characterized by episodes of hypomania and disabling depression. A diagnosis of bipolar II disorder requires at least one hypomanic episode. This is used mainly to differentiate it from unipolar depression. Although a patient may be depressed, it is very important to find out from the patient or patient's family or friends if hypomania has ever been present using careful questioning. This, again, avoids the antidepressant problem. Recent screening tools such as the Hypomanic Check List Questionnaire (HCL-32) have been developed to assist the sometimes difficult detection of Bipolar II disorders.

Currently bipolar disorder has not been cured and although many psychiatrists and psychologists believe that it can be managed, many of those who suffer from bipolar disorder know that this is not the case. In many cases medications provide a temporary change in state of mind, which will make one with bipolar appear to be "normal" (whatever that is). The emphasis of treatment is on effective management of the long-term course of the illness, which can involve treatment of emergent symptoms, and managing the constantly changing short-term courses of the illness by continuing to experiment with prescription pill cocktails. Treatment methods include pharmacological and psychological techniques, however, most of those who suffer from bipoler disorder prefer to self medicate with alcohol and other drugs, while retaining their personality, creativity, memory (and other things lost as a result of side affects from various medications), as well their identity and self as a whole.

A variety of medications are used to treat bipolar disorder; most people with bipolar disorder require combinations of medications.

A good prognosis results from good treatment which, in turn results from an accurate diagnosis. Because bipolar disorder continues to have a high rate of both underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis it is often difficult for individuals with the illness to receive timely and competent treatment.

Bipolar disorder is a severely disabling medical condition. In fact, it is the sixth cause of disability in the world according to the World Health Organization. However, with appropriate treatment, many individuals with bipolar disorder can live full and satisfying lives. Persons with bipolar disorder are more likely to have periods of normal or near normal functioning between episodes.

The prognosis for bipolar disorder is, in general, better than that for schizophrenia. However, many atypical antipsychotics, which were originally developed to treat schizophrenia, have also been shown to be effective in bipolar mania.

Ultimately one's prognosis depends on many factors, which are, in fact, under the individual's control: the right medicines; the right dose of each; a very informed patient; a good working relationship with a competent medical doctor; a competent, supportive and warm therapist; a supportive family or significant other and a balanced lifestyle that includes exercise. One of the most important lifestyle changes is regular sleep and wake times, this cannot be stressed enough.

There are obviously other factors that lead to a good prognosis, as well, such as being very aware of small changes in one's energy, mood, sleep and eating behaviors as well as having a plan in conjunction with one's doctor for how to manage subtle changes that might indicate the beginning of a mood swing. Some people find that keeping a log of their moods can assist them in predicting changes.

The goals of long-term treatment are to help the individual achieve the highest level of functioning and to avoid relapse.
see a psychiatrist
Are they driving you crazy?
Nobody has ever had their lives affected in a positive way y knowing a bi polar.
My advice:
Run like the wind
It could also be hormonal. One way to find out is to get tested for hyperinsulinemia. If someone is high (10 or more for an adult), then a diet designed to lower the production of insulin will help to lower overproduction of other chemicals in the body that can result.

In the meantime, keep your eyes open to see what your friend is eating. If they mainly eat junk food, with little protein and high glycemic carbohydrates, then this will contribute to insulin overproduction.

I was diagnosed bi-polar. I got really depressed a lot. It was a nightmare trying to get the right meds. At first they put me on zyprexa and I gained 30 lbs! Then several others until finally I started on lamectal and it seems to work really well. No side effects
Some people are very moody. Bi-polar is the same as saying someone is very moody. Medicine should NEVER be taken, personal counseling should be used, and also eating a healthy diet. Medicine will MESS YOU UP. why? because all of the drugs that are prescribed for bi-polar are simply 'bogus' and they have terrible side-effects. The cure for Bi-polar is spiritual. Get right with God, and He will heal you.
I am bi-polar and I take abilify for the bi-polar symptoms and xanax for the anxiety. Also I see a psychiatrist every six months and sometimes more often than that if I need to. I don't gain any weight on these meds by the way (and I don't have any sexual side effects either).
can be bi-polar, can also be personality disorder, seek professional help, and unfortunately in my carreer in clinical trials in psychiatric fields i have not seen one psychotropic medication that has no sexual side-effects...
I DATED SOMEONE WITH BI-POLAR FOR ABOUT 8 MONTHS, I BROKE UP WITH HIM BECAUSE I COULDN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.
HE WOULD WALK INTO THE RIVER WITH EVERYTHING IN HIS POCKETS, HIS CELL, WALLET ETC. HIS GOLD FISH DIED AND HE HAD A LITTLE FUNERAL. HE CHECKED HIMSELF INTO A HOMELESS SHELTER AND HE WASN'T HOMELESS HE HAD HIS OWN APARTMENT. HE WALKED AROUND OUTSIDE WITH HIS WIENER HANGING OUT OF HIS PANTS. I JUST COULDN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE. THERE'S TO MUCH DRAMA.
Easily I do it!!!!!! I am offended you called it Bi-polar it's just that in my case as is I am sure in your case as well, some people are temper mental and can't cope with other peoples inconsistencies. I personally am a deep thinker so if I am in though about something which ever emotion that thought invokes I am going to feel that way! Secondly, many built up frustrations or anger can cause you to have mood swings! It is pure nature to act according to the thoughts or emotions in which you feel at the time the difference is when we vent to release the stresses no matter how small the issue!
A doctor can diagnose this disorder and recommend medication. There are several types and they all have some side effect. Sometimes a person can seem bi-polar when they are actually just suffering from depression. If it is depression, there are also medications but they don't treat the underlying cause. Be supportive and have them diagnosed.
There is another disorder that may want to check into called Borderline Personality Disorder - good website and support group called Welcome to Oz. Good book to get is called walking on Eggshells - helps you cope with family member or loved one afflicted with BPD.
well to be honest i am bi-polar but i do not do the way that this friend of yours is doing...bi-polar people has their highs and lows ..it is a chemical imbalance that causes mood swings and anxiety ...from depression to feeling real good...but my friend says that she goes and gets in the moods where she snaps at some little thing...so i guess it just depends on the person..it can be helped my medication...i would try and see a doctor and see if they can prescribe some medicine to help..it does not always get rid of the depression..and lord knows i get upset and anxious and worry about things that i do not even know that anything is wrong...so you would have to explain how your friend is to a doctor....i hope this helps you and i hope you get the proper medicine to help...i do not like to even mention my problems really but i thought this might help....
Alot of people I know are bipolar. Its a very scary thing, if its not controlled!! One of my friends married someone that was bipolar, but didnt know much about it, till they already were married, they've been married for 3 1/2 & have every problem imaginable. He finally got the right meds for her, & she has her bad days, but overall are doing ok now, but it takes alot of forgiving & patience & not taking things personal for it to work!! whether as a friend, bf or gr or spouse. That person needs to get to the doctor & see whats best for them to take to help them, it could take a few different pills to experiment to know what helps that person. You can also look up bipolar disorder on the internet & read about it. Thats what I did when my friend found out they had it, it helped to know what to expect....
go to a pshycologist. they can diagnose bipolar disorder or just be sure that nothings wrong
Well. I'm bi-polar. I'm not on any medications though. What to do about it...deal with it? I forgot the names of all the medications for it...sorry. This is a really pointless answer...
Bi polar disorder is different in everyone. The common symptoms are drastic mood changes. One minute you can be really high(manic) talking a hundred miles a minute and the next extremely low(depressed)sometimes suicidal. With out meds it can be very hard to control. There are a lot of new products for bi polar, you just need to find the one that works best for your personal symptoms. Also check into a program for friends and family's of those with mental illnesses. This could help you talk to your friend and get them some help.
