Is Zanex and upper or a downer? Is it highly addictive?

Question:
A friend of mine takes Zanex for depression. Whenever the person is on it they are out of control, extremely hyperactive, and a nervous wreck. The person says they take the medication to calm down, however, it seems that they take it to get high.

Is it an upper or downer? What are the effects?

Answers:
I take 1mg of xanex for anxiety attacks at night. I was told by my doctor that it is infact addictive. It works well for calming my mind (racing thoughts etc) and putting me to sleep. However, the side effects are almost being hung over in the morning, dead tired, headache it can also cause or worsen depression. It is definitley a downer, look at it as a form a valium.
Xanax is an anti anxiety drug. It's a system depressant--meaning it slows everything down in the body. It is highly addictive and coming off of it has to be medically supervised as it can cause seizures and death.
