I've never worked while on SSI(not SSDI) & have always done reviews by mail. Why does SSI want me to come in?

Question:
I received a letter stating that social security wants me to come into the local office in person to comlplete my regular review and show proof of employment or self-employment? I have difficulty going into the office, and would prefer to do the review by mail.

I have not worked ONCE since receiving social security benefits, and I've seen the same doctor during all of this time.

I've tried calling my local social security office, but the line is constantly busy, or I'm transferred to voice mail. I left two voice messages for the caseworker today, but when I called to leave another, his voice mail had been CHANGED to say he's out of the office until the day I'm scheduled to go in. Although the receptionist said he was there. Maybe he was just leaving or something. Anyway, I'll have no way of asking questions or changing my appointment. When I spoke with others at the office, I was told I had to speak to the caseworker who sent me the letter.

Answers:
That is the new policy now. When I went in, I had to bring all my prescription bottles and the past 3 years worth of documented prescriptions (a pharmacy print out) everything from medicaid, my apt. lease, electric, gas and phone bills. They photo copied everything at their office. Reason being (from what I was told) is a big crack down on the people who are abusing the program, and to prevent mistakes that happen often on the phone.
I had my mom pick me up and take me. She was also able to explain to my CM how I was doing in her opinion. Her support was great.
This is how the reviews are going to be now, and the are going to be more often. I had always done mine by phone before, so I know how you feel. Your letter should have the details of what you need to bring in with you. I suggest having a close friend or relative take you. A good support goes a long way! Good Luck!
I don't have SSI or SSDI, but I think every now and then they probably do face to face interviews to update information, be sure they've got it all inputted correctly. So it's best to go to your appointment probably or they might stop your benefits temporarily.
