One technique you can try to develop is learning how to step outside of your emotions. When you feel angry, say to yourself: "Isn't it interesting that I feel angry right now? I wonder why?" When you feel anxious, say to yourself: "Isn't it interesting that I'm feeling anxious right now? I wonder what that's about?"
Learn to separate your emotions from your mind. Try to become an objective observer of your emotions, and you will have a greater sense of control.
Another technique that can help you objectify your emotions is to keep a written log of your emotions. If you feel angry, write it down: "3:45 pm - full of anger." If you feel anxious, write it down: "4:30 pm - feel anxious for some reason..." Putting the feelings down on paper, recording when the emotions occur and how long they last, will also give you a sense of greater control.
