Question:
I think so. Help someone who is trying to help themselves.

Answers:
I beleive it depends on the severity of the depression or of the other mental incapacities. New college students have two choices when begining their new lives. Either they can choose to find groups of people who can "serve" as supporters, loyal friends, etc. Or the student can choose to hide from a new experiance because of fear. I have been treated for depression for two years and I am about to enter college as a freshman. I am choosing to have my new begining as a positive experiance so I will not have to live with depression and fear. If you know or acquainted with the student, I recommend talking with them, and really trying to figure out what the cause(s) of depression may be. For me, college will most likely help with my depression, but for others it may worsen it because of the change in living on your own, being faced with new opportunities, and fear of life in general. Hope this helps!

Yes, social interaction would be good for anyone with depression, I would think anyway.
Yes i think with all the study you will be doing will make you forget about other problem that you have .think positivily and live one day at a time:)
College will add to your depression. Start to build your support base now. Many colleges have mental health officials who know how to handle and treat depression through counseling. Try that before meds. And remember everybody gets depressed. You can snap out of it...because You are GREAT!
I think it can help because you can gain self esteem, develop new interests, and build new friendships, but it isn't a blanket cure.

..but college can add to depression or even cause depression. Many students have seperation issues with family/friends, or do not do as well in the new environment or in a new style of academic pursuit. When students have difficulty in these areas, depression can occur.
Hi Diva,

Maybe the change will help - focus on your studies, and don't get caught up in all the partying and social drama. Using alcohol and drugs, and getting caught up in all the dating drama will contribute to depression. Choose your friends wisely. Most colleges have good counseling centers, so use it if you need it. I wish you the best - let us know how you do!

Love, Jack
