Trouble Focussing?

Question:
I have amazing trouble focussing on a task at hand. I am easily distracted and though I make a to-do list for every day I rarely get everything done. It is not too much and they are not hard. I am especially bad at doing my work (work from home). As I said I allow myself to become distracted by things. I do best in my day when I have many small tasks to accomplish, but I do need to get more "work" work done throughout my day.
Does anyone have any techniques that will help me stick to what I plan to do?

Answers:
I totally relate. Pretty much how I ended up with your question. Got distracted.... Went for a cup of coffee. Got disinterested in what I was doing or forgot...

What you describe is typical of ADD/ADHD. A lot of people don't consider it a problem, or even a legit disorder. Or they associate it with unruly school kids. Not necessarily so.

Do you or others consider you absent minded? Do you have a hard time completing tasks? Is your mind on 20 different things at once? Do you catch yourself finishing other peoples sentences? Do you get overwhelmed when theres a lot of work to be done? Do you find it imparing? Do you make simple mistakes easily on stuff? These are a few classic signs.

And it can be dangerous! Mistyping a prescription. Getting confused while driving. Forgetting to take medince on a regular basis. Forgetting to make important calls... like to my doc, who will get me the prescription for my medicine which I'll forget to take...

Another test is this. Ever watched Pulp Fiction? If you thought the plot was completely in order by the end of the movie, and the movie made more sense than all other movies you have watched, you are probably ADD/ADHD.

But its something that can be delt with, and delt with well. Making lists is good. PACE YOURSELF. only put 3-5 things on your to do list. That's all. If you are around distractions, cut them out. I went without a TV for three years. It was helpful. If I have to study, I go to the library. Or I run from my distraction like it was the plague. Its okay, because I'll forget about what I wanted to do anyways, lol. I'll use post it notes if needed.

GET INTO A ROUTINE. routines help. immesnly. If you do certain things at the same time every day, you have less of a tendency to forget. I know, easier said than done.

MUSIC. Sometimes good music can help. I prefer something with a steady beat. So no syncopated jazz, lol. I find J.S. Bach helps me relax and focus on the task at hand. I don't get distrated with words that way.

MEDICATION. If you had a cold, and were utterly miserable, would you be oppsed to taking something for it? Or if you had diabetes? Same would go with this. I've heard of stories where people will take concerta and they go into a cleaning trance. If other methods have failed, and theres not holistic approach, I woudn't be afraid of pills.

Anyways, you are defintely not alone. They say a kick in the *** helps.... I can't tell you the number of times that has happened to me. I busted my *** to burnout several times. Now I have high anxiety on top of the ADHD. Excessive coffee doesn't help... BUT a cup or two CAN. Its a stimulant, like ritalin and company. Studies show that nicotine can help too. But don't start smoking. Its very addicting, expensive, and culturly unpopular. Best of luck to you.
