It helps too (if you're a believer) to do a little prayer before you fall asleep.

i have that problem too. i start to try to think of nothing then all of a sudden i am thinkin about why im thinkin about nothing. and then i fall asleep before i can get too much farther
I am the same way I have given up I just stay up until i get sleepy. I am tired of trying to go to sleep and all i do is toss and turn. so no more fighting it i have tried everything.
Try relaxation exercises(guided relaxation on CDs or downloaded off of internet.)
Go to the doctor and get sleeping pills, that's the only thing that has stopped my mind at night other than pure exhaustion
take a sleeping pill.
Stretches and such like the one above stated.
As far as not being able to sleep with all of that going on in your mind.if available, use art, music, or some form of creative expression to get that mess out. The human mind has many things going on at once for a reason..it doesn't just happen.
If you have lots of things swirling around in your head, go ahead and turn on the light, and write some of them down. When I have lots going on, I have to do this. Making a to do list or a list of things you are worried about will get them out of your head and onto paper, and give you the feeling that you'll be able to handle them in the morning.
When I am feeling extra stressed about something coming up that I need to get done, and I really can't settle down and sleep, I actually get up and do a couple of things related to it that will put me a little bit ahead the next day. Yes I go to sleep later after that, but usually my mind is quieter. It doesn't help to lay there and stress about not sleeping, so get up and do a few things, and you'll probably be able to sleep after that.
I watch TV till i get tired, just bore yourself to sleep
try melatonin it's a dietary supplement that similar to the chemical in the brain that tells it it's time to sleep. Trust me I've had the same problem it works.
Supposedly it helps to keep regular hours, to use your bed only for sex and sleeping, and to keep the room cool. Some people find white noise to be soothing. I've been told it helps to decide about a half hour before you sleep to sit down and write the thoughts that tend to clutter your mind. As you write them down, you say to yourself, "This is on this paper now .. I'm taking it from my brain and letting it rest here while I sleep." Then you like in bed and tighten and release the muscles, starting with your feet and working your way up your body. Concentrate on your breathing - picture it as a clear light filling your lungs and exhaling stale thoughts and tension.
i have that same problem and am gonna make a Dr. appt (as soon as i get off my but and do it lol). the only thing that really helps me is to turn on the radio just loud enough to hear the words and then sing along with the songs in my head. if your singing in your head you cant think about anything and you kind of sing yourself to sleep.
I preset the TV to turn off after an hour and listen to it till I drop off, alternatively you can quieten the thoughts but telling yourself its time to sleep.it takes practice, acknowledge the thought that pops up and then think I'll think about that tomorrow now I have to sleep.
I often can't sleep either. Melatonin is a very good sleep aid. It helps to create a sleep pattern so that your body remembers to sleep. I use it. It's very helpful.
A lot of the time, people confuse "worrying" with being buzzed by some really bad*ss food ingredients. Worry isn't keeping you awake. You are awake, and worrying to fill the time, because you've been made hyper by something in a food or drink. Look at the labels of the foods you ate tonight: are they chock full of MSG, sodium phosphates, calcium disodium edta, and soy? Most or all of these can effect people who are over sensitive to food ingredients. I have this, and here's a simple test. If I've gotten a snoot full of these poisons, my ears start ringing. I know then that I've messed up and eaten some bunch of highly processed, over-preserved junk (like that "embalmed" meat from Walmart, that comes in its own little plastic coffin!). Or something like even a bowl of cereal---You know, "Get Komplete, it has every vitamin and mineral in one spoonful than you'll ever need in six lifetimes! That's why it glows in the dark!" So watch what you eat in the evening. Eat as all natural foods as you can, and don't overdo vitamin c foods like oj (that kind of stuff can get you wound up too!). I can provide a list of other foods to avoid.
TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!
Take Melatonin and/or 5-HTP
You can find this in your vitamin store.
See what combo works for you.
It's natural. effective, and cheap.
