Do psychologists have to report "cutting" if patient is over 18, desires to stop, and not suicidal?
Question:
Answers:
The HEPA does make any reporting of patient condition a bit sticky. However all medical professionals are bound by a code of ethics to do no harm. The basic concept is simply whether the patient is a harm to themselves or others. Cutting would be harming oneself. So it falls into doctor discretion along with severity of the wounds. Cutting is often the result of the individual's attempt to rationalize emotional pain. The concept is that physical pain can be understood and explained. Inner turmoil is alot more difficult to accept and find comfort. Most typically the person is unable to fully express their feelings in adult situations and relationships due to some type of abuse or neglect in childhood. These acts grow in severity as the person ages in some cases. So the patients overall mental health would play a big factor as to the doctors obligation to be a mandated reportor.
Other Answers:
if the patient is over 18, does not plan on harming themself or others, then there is no need to tell anyone. psychologists are only required to report things if they are harmful to the patient or others, and of course, if the patient is a minor. mental health is private
no you are covered by the dr patient confidentiality:) When something like this is 'reported' it means to a) the police, or b) the state agency responsible for protecting children and/or women, and c) the local or state agency that tracks disease occurrences. The criteria for reporting are when a crime has been committed, or a person or his disease pose a definite risk to other people. This person is an adult, they do not pose a risk to themselves or others, and are not suicidal.
