Anyone with bi-polar disorder?

Question:

My daughter, who is only 10 is having huge mood swings and has been in counseling for a bit but it isn't helping. When she gets down we can't seem to help her at all. The next step seems to be meds but I wish there was something more.
Anyone have this disorder and what age were you when you were diagnosed? Advice?

A ten year old should almost never be diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. Bipolar disorder is an adult disorder that should never be given to a child especially a ten year old without many hours of assessment (counseling does not count). I would suggest you get a second opinion from a licensed clinical psychologist who is willing to do a full assessment. I'm afraid I'm not sure about the long term affects of mood stabilizers on children are but I would definitely get a second opinion before you start her on medication. I wish you the best of luck.

From what I understand there is no cure for this disorder. Medications really do help with the mood swings, although, not a cure and it will not completely stop the highs and lows, but can stabilize them somewhat. Are you sure this is bipolar and not just the beginning of her menstrual cycle with pre-menstrual/hormone mood swings as girls are starting this earlier and earlier. I would definitely get a second opinion before I started my 10 year old daughter on medications for bipolar. There is also things the doctor can give her to ease her anxiety if it is just pre-menstrual symptoms. Wish you and her all the best!

I would not worry at age 10. Most bi-polar is diagnosed at age 14 or above. I would watch her carefully. If she experiences long stretches of the manic mode it is a better indicator of the bipolar disorder. It is no tfun to deal with, we are thinking my step daughter probably has it to. The medications will help, but I do not know about giving them to the kids, we have not progressed that far yet.

im not bi-polar but i deal with passive aggressive disorder..my mom tells me i was around three when she figured out thast there was something strange going on with me and that it wasnt ur regular toddler tantrums...it was odd!...so ever since i have been taking meds and all meds really do help!..with whatever the disorder..schizophrenia,bi-pol... paranoia,,whatever it is..Meds really do help..there is just no cure for these things!...it sucks i know..we will just have to deal with these disorders and dont forget to take the meds!
