Without a professional evaluation, and diagnosis, it would be extremely difficult to give her condition a name, In some cases severe depression can cause these kinds of symptoms as well as a number of other disorders such as bi-polar disorder. Schizophrenia is a possibility as well it is just not the only possibility.
That sounds like Scizophrenia. Here's a good place to start.
Schizophrenia is where they hear voices but someone under 18 cannot ethically be diagnosed with it. I am unsure what you are referring to with hurting themselves. It sounds like you are describing cutting
The symptoms of schizophrenia interfere with a person's ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions, and relate to others.
Here are some of the more commonly reported symptoms of schizophrenia:
Hallucinations — sensing things that others do not sense
Delusions — false beliefs that may become fixed despite evidence to the contrary
Altered emotions — having feelings that don't seem right for what is going on or having no feelings at all
Lack of motivation or desire to do the things you used to enjoy doing
Difficulty staying focused and completing tasks
Disorganized thinking
Self abuse is another type of illness
Hey
It can be depression or something worse. You never know with out evalution. Depression can play many odd tricks on the brain, so it can be just depression, but also other mental problems. Just wait for the evaluation. During that time your friend can research Depression & Schizophrenia. Just go to google and type in either one, but i doubt that its schizophrenia cause it starts out in the 20's and the earliest is in the teen's as early as 16.
Good luck
my mother does stuff like that but it is related to mental illness she is bipolor, manic depressive, and skio. I don't know if this might help your friend or her daughter ask your friend if her daughter ever talks to these voices or if she ever acts like there is people there when there isn't. example my mother thinks that she has handed someone some keys but there is noone there. If her daughter does talk to them or act like that the best thing is to get her to the doctor soon or even the local emergency room will normally help also.
