The Oedipal Complex usually manifests itself in young boys. As they get older and begin identifying their gender role, they naturally begin to compete for female attention and, since the mother is typically the dominant female in their lives, the competition is with the dominant male in the household (dad).
This does occur in girls, as well (Electra Complex). While the age at onset varies, it often is in the pre-teen years (7 to 11 years of age)
