can you be hypnotised to get rid of bad memories?
Question:
Answers:
Hypnosis puts you into a state of deep relaxation, this means that you may be able to access memories that you are blocking or go over memories that you find difficult to deal with normally. It does not mean that the memories will be erased but it mean that they effect you less. The reason why some memories are difficult to deal with is that they have not been processed properly (often because you were so stressed at the time the event happened), by relaxing through hypnosis you can start to go over these memories and so begin to process them. It can be tough and does not happen over night. You need to find a therapist that you trust in order to feel comfortable doing this. Another way is a cognitive therapy technique called 'reliving' which works in the same kind of way. If you live in the UK you can get referred by your GP and should be able to get free or subsidised treatment. If you want to pay sessions can cost anything from £50 - £130 an hour, go to the bps (british psychological society) website for a list of qualified therapist.
