I suffer from extreme anxiety and stress. Why wont my doctor prescribe xanax? What should I do?

Question:
I have taken xanax before when I was in my teen years with great success and no problems.

Answers:
change doctor
Maybe you should seek some councilling first, then go back to the doctor, if that doesn't work I would seek a second opinion.

Sometimes however the drug you took as a teen may work differently due to any other medication your on and the hormones in your body, just because a drug worked then doesn't mean it will now.

Good Luck
I don't know, but perhaps your doctor feels you can deal with this situation on your own, and don't need any medication for it...

If you are suffering from these things, would it not be best to find out why you are stressed and anxious and try and deal with the root of the problem.
Whatever your doctors reason for not perscribing Xanax was, it had to be a sound decision.

Did he offer any alternatives like anxiety management classes, support groups, or counseling?

there are a lot of different relaxation techniques you can find on line...my favorite being progressive muscle relaxation....

the key component is making time to relax as important a commitment as the other things in your life.

make time for you.
Xanax is a benzodiazepine with abuse potential. It is helpful for anxiety and panic attack short term, not meant for long term therapy like all benzodiazepines. You could try St. Johns Wort, a herbal remedy that helps with those condition. What is your doctor's approach to treatment? I am just curious what is being prescribed or given, if anything?
