Answers:
I've had agoraphobia so I realize how limiting it can be. I didn't leave my house for months!

But you can get better. Here are a couple of suggestions:

1. Try a different medication, or a different combination of medications. I had to try medication after medication until I found the ones that worked for me.

2. Try to get a friend or family member to take you to a doctor. Bring a cell phone with you, too. And some extra meds (extra Xanax in your purse) in case you have a panic attack while you're out. Anything that will help to make you feel safe. Doctors may disagree, but I think that the worst thing for anxiety is having more panic attacks. They want you to go and face your fears, which makes sense in theory, but if you try to face your fears and you just have a panic attack, then your fears increase even more. Its better if you face your fears slowly, with a friend, with the proverbial security blankey, and then you can convince your mind that everything is going to be okay after all.

3. Any help you can get from friends and family is great. Neighbors, local social workers, etc., are useful too. See if you can get into a state or local disability or mental health program; I haven't paid my doctor bills or for my meds for years.

4. Get out of the house, as much as you can. Go a little further every day. Keep increasing the area of your safety zone. But its perfectly okay (and probably a good idea) to take baby steps. You don't need to freak yourself out or anything.

5. Don't give up! You can get better.

Panic and anxiety problems are caused by an imbalace of naturally occurring chemicals in the brain. Mostly seroronin and norepinepherine.

Some medications correct these imbalances for certain people and for other people, they don't work.

I have panic disorder and anxiety as well and after taking many, many medications, I've found that Paxil is the most effective.
I haven't had a full-blown panic attack in almost 8 years thanks to Paxil.

The combo that works for me is xanax, wellbutrin, buspar & at night seroquel.
