what is depakote??
Question:
Answers:
uh depakote is hardcore compared to effexor.
depakote basically made me really really tired and sleepy.
for some reason my doctor had me take it in the morning and before bed and so i basically slept through my classes for half a semester before I..um...decided to switch meds.
still, it's really nothing compared to the intense drowsiness of abilify or (gulp) seroquel.
Other Answers:
Depakote, I think, was originally a seizure medication (don't quote me on this) that is also used to treat bipolar disorder.
Honestly, I haven't had any experiences with it myself, but I've heard that it's not very fun.
yes, i am on depakote (am 27) and have been on it since i was 11. for me it's to stop seizures. haven't had one since then. i've heard it can be used for depression. the only side affects it has are drowsiness, dizziness and the sun can seriously affect it big time. i've almost passed out a lot b/c of this. so be careful!
*those are the only side affects i've heard of anyway...for seizure patients that take it.
I was on Depakote for about 8 years, from 11 to 19, for my epilepsy.
I didn't really have any problems with it, per se, but I was taking birth control (ortho-tricyclen) while I was on Depakote later on, and when I switched doctors (went from a pediatrician-neurologist to an "adult" neurologist), he told me that Depakote pretty much cancels out the effects of that birth control, and thus isn't one of the best seizure medications for adult women. :)
So! I'm not sure what you're taking it for, and I'm sure there's your typical plethora of "may cause drowsiness, loss of whatever, whosamawhatsit" (I seem to be a bit immune to those kinds of side-effects myself), but I never had any bad experiences with the medication itself--that just may be a handy indirect effect to be aware of.
Oh, and also--don't drink (or be really careful *when* drinking) while taking Depakote. It tends to intensify the alcohol-y effect exponentially (don't ask ;P). I'm sure that's pretty common among a lot of medications, though.
I have taken it to try and prevent migraines. It didn't seem to help me much so I'm not on it anymore. The side effects I had were basically that I was exhausted for about a week or two. (I was exhausted to the point where I felt like I was about to fall asleep while I was standing up and walking around).
You should ask your doctor about possible side effects. The truth is that medicine has different effects with different people. If you're worried that you'll be extremely tired, find different ways of transportation (rather than driving). Hope you find something that works for you.
