Starting classes in 1.5 weeks...what if nobody recognizes me? How can I calm myself down?

Question:
I'm terrified because I've gained 22 lbs since March. I'm scared that nobody will recognize me, or that they will ask me about my weight gain. I know nobody will say anything, but I'm worried about what the students and professors will think. I go to a private university, so I know many of the students. I'm having so much anxiety about this, and I almost wish that I didn't have to go to school this fall to avoid potential questions. I hate who I've become.

I was on medical leave for bulimia last spring. My main fear is that when I see counselor at the student health center that she will question my problem, now that I am fat (I am allowed to return this fall on the condition that I meet with her for the academic year). I can't help but believe she won't take my problem seriously. What can I do to calm myself down? I am very worried, and I don't know if I can concentrate on schoolwork when all I can think about is how much weight I've gained. I can't stop bingeing...

Answers:
I think that most people realize that when a person is treated for an eating disorder, they gain a lot of weight. I mean, it makes sense - anorexics starting eating more = more fat on their bodies and bulimics stop throwing up = more fat on their bodies. I really don't think that you will have as many people questioning you as you are expecting - and the counselor will definitely not question you.

That said, just try not to let it bother you. Are you exercising? That's a good way to not only lose weight, but get more comfortable with your body. As you grow more comfortable with your body - through whatever means, exercising, meeting with the counselor, losing weight, etc etc - the questions will stop.

For now, just kind of brush it off. I really don't think that many people will ask you, outright, about your eating disorder - most people are too scared to do that. If they mention your weight, just laugh about it - like 'oh god, I know, can you believe that my mom bought a new box of twinkies EVERY TIME she went to the grocery store while I was home? I think they were planning on eating me and were fattening me up' or something.

Good luck.

if they're your friends, they'll be supportive of you no matter what. if not, forget them.

you need to start seeing a therapist or join a support group in your area or even online. see a doctor and ask him about anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications. they may help you- it helped me.

take things one day at a time. remember that you are not living to eat, you're eating to live.

join a gym if you haven't already. don't make exercise all about losing weight- sure, it's an awesome side effect, but that is not the goal. think of it as keeping yourself active and healthy- you'll notice that going every other day will even improve your mood.

good luck to you- and feel free to e-mail me.
I gained a bit of weight when I was depressed (due to my husband) but one day I woke up and decided its my life ,so stopped comforting myself with food, took up exercise again, was nice to me, nails, hair , clothes etc got my confidence back. I also brought Paul McKenna easy weight loss CD and that really made sense. don't be a hater, love yourself. Good luck xxx
You have too many problems to be starting school again. Seriously, you are torn up about gaining 22 pounds? You are torn up about what people will think? Ask your parents to send you to a therapist and take the semester off. You are not right emotionally or psychologically.
