Bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) is a diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders in which the person experiences states or episodes of depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. Left untreated, it is a severely disabling psychiatric condition. The difference between bipolar disorder and unipolar disorder (also called major depression) — for the purpose of this introduction — is that bipolar disorder involves "energized" or "activated" mood states in addition to depressed mood states. The duration and intensity of mood states varies widely among people with the illness. Fluctuating from one mood state to another is called "cycling" or having mood swings. Mood swings cause impairment not only in one's mood, but also in one's energy level, sleep pattern, activity level, social rhythms and thinking abilities. Many people become fully disabled — for significant periods of time — and during this time have great difficulty functioning.
In short, your very happy one day, then very depress the next day.

symptoms wise is when someone feels manic (extreme happiness) one minute and then depression (extreme sadness) the next without any logical explanation
Please don't listen to any advice, go straight to a doctor, or even two doctor's. There are way too many armchair experts that could really make things worse.
Get copy of the DMS4. It will explain this in detail. Put simply, People with this condition go from every sad days to days where they can not sleep.
Bipolar Disorder is characterized by episodes of depression and mania. These mood swings may be short (a few minutes) or long (even entire days).
When a person suffers from Bipolar disorder with episodes of depression, he or she feels anxious, sad, melancholic, low in energy, and many times has suicidal thoughts. This condition may change to mania, which is the total opposite when the person feels he/she is on top of the world (delusions of grandeur).
There are a few different kinds, ranging from Bipolar l that has the highest suicide rate due to the uncontrollable functions of ones mood, they might be fine for months, then get a hightened sence, fast speech, over achieving ect. then go into a huge slump, it can cycle anyway in different people, some by lunar activity even. Type ll is less explosive to say.just more of the depression symptoms. but can also have pretty significant highs and lows. If anyone you know might be having these symptoms PLEASE get them help as nicely and without seeming judging. This is a VERY SERIOUS disorder and can cause very uncontrollable violent outbursts. Good luck and godbless, there are plenty of sites to give you more info, just search bipolar disorders on the web.
My mom has bipolar disorder. Much of the time, she is "normal" and very easygoing. However, she struggles a lot with paranoia, impulsivity, trouble sleeping, racing thoughts, and can be unbelievably quick to anger. I think the hardest out of all of these is the paranoia---she always thinks people are thinking bad thoughts about her. It's so tough to see someone you love suffering from this. She was on medication, but she is now off them (her own choice, so what can I do?). Anyway, I have seen this mental disorder firsthand, and if you think you have it there are ways that you can be helped. Start with a local doctor and go from there. Tell someone! My mom wasn't diagnosed until she threatened to kill herself. Don't let it come to that!!
