How to interpret the score on GARS (Autism Test)?

Question:

Answers:
Basically, the GARS (Gilliam Autism Rating Scale) looks at 3 or 4 (depending on the version of the test) areas: Stereotyped Behavior, Communication, Social Interaction and (in the newer version) Developmental Disturbances. This is done by having people familiar with the individual rate him/ her according to the criteria of the scale. Based on this information, an individual's "probability" of being on the autism spectrum is determined. In order to get a "probable" diagnosis of autism, a certain score needs to be achieved in several different areas. Basically, if the GARS score shows a "high probability" of autism, the next recommended step would be referral to a specialist. GARS can't give you a definitive diagnosis; it's a preliminary tool. If you are unsure about the interpretation, you should ask the psychologist or evaluator who intitiated the GARS rating.
I am assuming you recently had one of these done.If so, ask the doc to give you the results in laymens terms. If you didn't do it through a doc, I would suggest you do so.
