To be selfish means to look out for one's own interests, i.e. one's own life. To eat to support your life is selfish. To make love to the woman you love is selfish. To have pride in ones accomplishments and character is selfish. To use one's mind in the pursuit of ones own happiness is selfish. By what standard can one judge these selfish things as evil? Only by an irrational one.

Man's life is the standard of value. All that supports a man's life is good, and all that destroys man's life is evil.
Is selfishness good or evil?
If evil is that which destroys man's life -- and to look after one's self interest -- is to support one's life, then how can selfishness be rationally held to be evil? It cannot.

Ayn Rand rejects altruism, the view that self-sacrifice is the moral ideal. She argues that the ultimate moral value, for each human individual, is his or her own well-being. Since selfishness (as she understands it) is serious, rational, principled concern with one's own well-being, it turns out to be a prerequisite for the attainment of the ultimate moral value. For this reason, Rand believes that selfishness is a virtue.
In the introduction to her collection of essays on ethical philosophy, The Virtue of Selfishness (VOS), Rand writes that the "exact meaning" of selfishness is "concern with one's own interests" (VOS, vii). In that work, Rand argues that a virtue is an action by which one secures and protects one's rational values—ultimately, one's life and happiness. Since a concern with one's own interests is a character trait that, when translated into action, enables one to achieve and guard one's own well-being, it follows that selfishness is a virtue. One must manifest a serious concern for one's own interests if one is to lead a healthy, purposeful, fulfilling life.
Rand understands, though, that the popular usage of the word, "selfish," is different from the meaning she ascribes to it. Many people use the adjective "selfish" to describe regard for one's own welfare to the disregard of the well-being of others. Moreover, many people would be willing to characterize any instance of desire-satisfaction in these circumstances as "selfish," no matter what its content. Thus, many people arrive at the following composite image: selfish people are brutish people who are oblivious to the negative consequences of their actions for their friends and loved ones and who abuse the patience, trust, and good will of all comers to satisfy their petty whims.
Rand certainly recognizes that there are people who fit this description, and she certainly does not believe that their behavior is in any sense virtuous. But she opposes labeling them "selfish." Rand believes that this application of the word blurs important philosophical distinctions and foreordains false philosophical doctrines. First, this understanding of selfishness construes both whim-fulfillment and the disregard of others' interests as genuinely self-interested behaviors, which they are not. Second, this understanding of selfishness suggests an altruist framework for thinking about ethics.
To elaborate on the first point: Rand believes that the elements of human self-interest are objective. All human beings have objective biological and psychological needs, and one's actual interests are identified by reference to these needs. Mere whim-fulfillment is therefore not constitutive of human well-being because one's whims might be at odds with one's actual needs. Moreover, the character traits of the "selfish" brute are not compatible with any human being's actual, rational interests. Humans live in a social world; in order to maximize the value of their interactions with others, they should cultivate a firm commitment to the virtues of rationality, justice, productiveness, and benevolence. A commitment to these virtues naturally precludes such brutish behavior. To elaborate on the second point: Rand argues that the conventional understanding of selfishness implies an altruistic framework for thinking about ethics. Within this framework, the question, "Who is the beneficiary of this act?" is the most important moral question: right acts are acts undertaken for the "benefit" of others and wrong acts are acts undertaken for one's own "benefit." Rand believes that this approach passes over the crucial ethical questions: "What are values?" and "What is the nature of the right and the good?" In addition, the altruist framework suggests a dichotomy between actions that promote the interests of others to one's own detriment and actions that promote ones own interests to the detriment of others. Rand rejects this dichotomy and affirms the harmony of human interests (cf. "The 'Conflicts' of Men's Interests," VOS 57-65).
Rand writes, "[A]ltruism permits no concept of a self-respecting, self-supporting man—a man who supports his own life by his own effort and neither sacrifices himself nor others … it permits no concept of benevolent co-existence among men … it permits no concept of justice" (VOS, ix).
For her, the truly selfish person is a self-respecting, self-supporting human being who neither sacrifices others to himself nor sacrifices himself to others. This value-orientation is brilliantly dramatized in the character of Howard Roark in The Fountainhead. The further elements of selfishness - the character traits that, when translated into action, implement a concern for one's own real interests - are discussed and illustrated in that work, in Atlas Shrugged, and throughout Rand's non-fiction.
Finally, one might ask why Rand chose to use the term, "selfish," to designate the virtuous trait of character described above rather than to coin some new term for this purpose. This is an interesting question. Probably, Rand wished to challenge us to think through the substantial moral assumptions that have infected our ethical vocabulary. Her language also suggests that she believes that any other understanding of selfishness would amount to an invalid concept, i.e., one that is not appropriate to the facts and/or to man's mode of cognition (see VOS vii-xii, and Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, esp. Ch. 7). In addition, one might interpret Rand as asserting that her definition captures the historical and etymological meaning of the word. But certainly, her praise of selfishness communicates instantaneously and provocatively the practical, this-worldly, egoistic, and profoundly Greek orientation of her ethical thought.

Introduction
A growing body of economic literature is addressing the issue of incentives for individuals who take part in the Open Source Software (OSS) movement, while empirical analyses focus on individual developers but neglect firms that do business with it. During 2002, we conducted a large-scale survey on 146 Italian firms supplying OSS in Italy and this paper compares our data on firms’ motivations with data emerging from surveys made on individual programmers. Our objective is to analyse the role played by different classes of motivations (social, economic and technological) in determining the involvement of different groups of agents in Open Source activities.
Why do individual developers and firms take part in the Open Source movement?
The founding fathers of the Open Source movement trace programmers’ enthusiasm for it back to the values of the hacker culture (Raymond, 2001). A number of motivations, some socially linked (altruism and fighting for software freedom) and others of a hedonistic nature (fun in programming) are considered to be the underlying reasons. However, technological considerations also come into the picture when the prospect of engaging in Open Source activities is concerned. An open code permits the flow of feedback from developers and users, which is very useful for improving software.
In terms of economic theory, there are other motivations beyond intrinsic usefulness. Other factors include gaining a reputation among one’s peers, signalling quality of human capital and learning are especially significant (Lerner and Tirole, 2002a; Dalle and David, 2003); these factors have always been important to the scientific community (David, 1991). Filling an unfilled market (Green, 1999) is another important economic incentive. Many Open Source projects take shape because of the lack of a specific program to perform a particular task.
New actors are now entering the Open Source arena. Software firms have started to supply products and services based on Open Source software aiming to make a profit from them, and in this they are aided by feedback and contributions from the Open Source community, which permits them to lower R&D costs. As a consequence, socially–based motivations need to be reviewed; rather than concentrating on individual programmers, we will consider firms and their incentives. Indeed, firms purchasing OSS must conform to the values of the OSS community in order not to betray the trust of developers and must cooperate by gifting their code in order to sustain cooperation. At the same time they must not hijack the code in order to not infringe the norms ruling OSS projects. This would reduce the incentives of individual programmers to contribute to projects which ultimately may benefit some firms. Another important incentive in economic terms is no longer having to be subject to the price and licence conditions imposed by large software companies. The Open Source framework does not allow for profit to be made from licence fees. As a consequence, the business models of firms working with Open Source software are mainly based on the supply of software–related services (Wichmann, 2002). If the programs within these services are proprietary, then the companies who supply them are bound to pay licence fees to those companies who own specific proprietary rights.
From a technological standpoint, the reasons for firms to make use of OSS are similar to those of individual developers. The user community comprises a very large group of beta testers for code inspection and programs for firms produced by the Open Source community. This allows firms to perform bug fixing much more quickly. Hence, this learning aspect should not be neglected. Ideas gleaned from Open Source projects may be used ultimately to develop commercial products (Lerner and Tirole, 2002b).
However there are other underlying motivations. Firms may engage in Free Software activities to obtain indirect revenues by the sale of related products.
Open Source motivations: A Comparison between individual and firms
We asked OSS producers for a subjective appreciation of the reasons behind their work. They were asked to give a score from 1 (wholeheartedly disagree) to 5 (wholeheartedly agree) (5–point Likert scale) for eleven items selected on the basis of the literature. We considered economic, social and technological incentives differently (Feller and Fitzgerald, 2002).
The variables are fairly concentrated around their mean values (Table 1), which range from 3.97 to 2.99 (variance: 0.14). Economic and technological motivations are near the top. All have mean values above the mean value of the variables taken as a whole (3.49). Their median and modal values are 4 and 5 respectively. Social motivations are ranked fifth and sixth.

The highest–ranking incentive is for using Open Source software seems to be promoting innovation by and in small enterprises. M4 has also the highest percentage of high scores (4 or 5: 71.9 percent) and the lowest percentage of low scores (1 or 2: 12.2 percent) [1]. This is a remarkable finding because it does not corroborate with the hypothesis that Open Source is about imitation, not innovation. Emancipation from the price and licence policies of large software companies is a crucial motivating factor for 35 percent of respondents, while learning and reputation rank eighth and ninth respectively next to the easier availability of good IT specialists in the Free Software field. In particular, the talent signalling motivation, strongly emphasized by Lerner and Tirole (2002a; 2002b), does not play an important role.
Our findings on social motivations agree with literature on the extrinsic nature of social motivations. The respondents in our sample do not agree with opposition to intellectual property rights advocated by the Open Source. However they do respect the unwritten laws of the Free Software community (M5, M6), but as means to save costs and enhance quality.
Among the technological motivations, firms’ responses point directly to the fundamental properties of the Open Source. More than 69 percent of our sample attach much importance to cooperation with individual developers, and 66 percent choose Open Source software because of its quality and reliability.
In order to obtain the aggregate of each set of incentives, we calculated the mean values of the scores assigned by each firm to economic, social and technological motivations respectively. The results corroborate the minor role of socially based motivations in determining why firms engage in the Open Source movement.

Paired-samples T test [2] shows that the differences in the mean values of EM and SM are statistically different from zero (p value = 0.031).
We compared our finding with those emerging from surveys taken among individual programmers (Bates et al., 2002; Ghosh et al., 2002; Hertel et al., 2003; Hars and Ou, 2002). The economic motivations are quite similar between the two groups. Both attach much importance to emancipation from large software companies. Developer surveys show that gaining a reputation among peers does not rank highly as an incentive for Free Software programmers. This is at odds with the theory in the literature stating that reputation ranks highly as a motivating factor in Open Source projects. Firms are not so unlike individual programmers in this respect.
Individual developers in all four surveys attach more importance to social motivations than the firms in our sample. In particular, the issue of software property rights shows higher percentage differences between the two groups. This supports the finding we noted earlier regarding the different nature of social motivations in the two groups of agents.
More than 41 percent of firms we surveyed attach much importance to feedback from the community of software developers. Such feedback is considered one of the four top motivations only by 27 percent of the developers taking part in the Ghosh et al. (2002) survey.
Most of the firms in our sample do not regard learning as a crucial motivating factor, while individual developers place much value on the chance to learn through participation in OSS projects. More than 80 percent of the respondents to the Hars and Ou (2002) survey strongly agree that Free Software activities are good for developing human capital.
Reliability and quality of Free Software products represent important incentives for more than 38 percent of the firms supplying Open Source solutions, while only 11 percent of the developers (Bates et al. (2002) survey) list this among the three most important incentives. Quality and reliability are crucial in the software market. This is particularly true for Open Source products and services that have to overcome the network externality effects, which tend to favour the diffusion of proprietary products. However other authors maintain that this is a very important incentive for individual developers also who are often reputed to denigrate the performance of proprietary programs.
The fill an unfilled market motivation shows a different pattern. Such motivation ranks among the three top for 33.8 percent of individual developers while only 16.5 percent of the firms in our sample strongly agree. This is probably due once again to the service–oriented business models of the respondents to our survey.
Having access to the data gathered by Hertel et al. (2003) on 143 developers of the Linux kernel, we performed a direct comparison between their findings and our findings. There is no discrepancy in measurement parameters — the authors measure the motivations for taking part in the Free Software movement with a five–point Likert scale. After having picked out the comparable items, we computed descriptive statistics and percentages of the scores for each incentive (Table 3).

Mann Whitney tests have been run to check for statistically significant differences in mean values (Table 4). The comparison highlights the heterogeneity in motivations between firms and individual developers very well. Developers assign higher scores to those items dealing with reputation gain and code reciprocation within the Free Software community, software freedom and learning. This is in accordance with the results described earlier. Finally, all mean differences are statistically different from zero in the two groups at a significance level of 5 percent or 1 percent. The item dealing with software property rights shows the highest mean difference in the two groups.

Conclusions
For many theoretical reasons, the question of why people participate in the Open Source movement has attracted the interest of economists and sociologists (Bonaccorsi and Rossi, 2003). Most empirical analyses have addressed the motivational profile of individual programmers, while little empirical evidence is available on firms that base their business models on Open Source.
We find significant differences between the set of motivations of individuals and those of firms. In particular, firms emphasise economic and technological reasons for entering and contributing to Open Source and do not subscribe to many social motivations that are, by contrast, typical of individual programmers. While one might expect these differences, it is interesting to observe that the more pragmatic motivational profiles of firms are accepted in the Free Software community, provided firms comply with the rules of the community. This means that the organisation of Open Source production is robust to a variety of motivations. Business motivations apparently do not destroy the community but on the other hand tend to reinforce it.

Well, it depends on the kind of selfishness. Sometimes you just have to do things for yourself. Even Jesus (if you believe the bible) had to find time for himself to get recharged by praying and sleeping.
But extreme selfishness and self-centeredness can hurt not only others, but ourselves. I know, I've been there. I was so unhappy for so long, and all the while I was trying to get things for ME all the time. I didn't know what else to do. But recently I've chilled out and realized that God is in control, and will take care of me. I'm now looking for opportunities to help other people, without expecting a reward. That feels good.
I still take time for myself. I quit drinking 32 days ago, and have to do a LOT of recovery work on my illnesses of alcoholism and depression. But it's a necessary "selfishness," because if I don't take care of myself, then I will be useless to others, and actually will be a burden on those around me.
Moderation is the key.

I don't think it is bad to be selfish AT TIMES. And mybe it is not really being selfish when you have to take care of yourself and your basic needs before you can take care of anyone else. I tend to be one of those people that thinks to much about what other people need and what will make them happy before I have even taken care of my needs....such as my own bills, my own emotional well being, and the things I believe in. I have given my time and money...times when I haven't really been able too.
I guess what I am saying is....don't JUST think of yourself...but think of what you need for yourself and then do what you can to help out others. Don't compromise your morals when it comes to helping them...or not helping them.
