Gen,mania is something that gives you hyperactivity,
insomnia(not being able to sleep for long periods of time),an energy burst, sometimes aggrevation, impulsiveness, some. too much anxiety, and it makes your thought flow faster.
In the beggining it is called a hypomania , when you might feel a bit more cheerful than as usual , and you might feel more energetic , but not as uncontrolabally as in mania, and you can feel abnormally good about yourself.
Then hypomani MAY turn into mania.Which is bad.Cos in mania your thoughts get faster and your adrenalin levels come up.If it is not cured, finally it can lead you to psychosis where you lose your connection with the reality. If you go through a ''mixed state'' you can both feel depressive and maniac, which means you have depression and mania at the same time.
Depression and mania are cause by the inbalance of different brain chemicals. But too much anti-depressants/wrong anti depressants may turn your depressiveness into mania. And some anti-manic medicines such as lithium may cause you to turn into the depressive mood.It is all a matter of a balance in your meds.
Usually,anti-depressants are not prescribed to manic depressives OR only prescribed with an anti-manic such as lithium , depakote , or tegretol. These anti-manic mood stabilizers are told to be ALSO protective about depression. But most of them are not as usefull in treating the depression as they are in treating the mania.WITH AN EXCEPTION OF ONE ANTI-MANIC MOOD STABILIZER CALLED LAMICTAL.
Lamictal is used for bipolar depression. It is in the same group of Depakote, and tegretol and it is an anti epileptic just like the others.Lamictal heals your depression but will probably won't get you into the manic phase like the other anti depressants.I found it really usefull. So even if you have a tendency to become manic after you start taking it,thenn you should ask your doctor to add Seroquel in order to use along with LAMICTAL.
If I were you I wouldn't use xanax cos it's addictive and it is not very often used in bipolar cases.
