can bipolar disorder get more severe over time if left untreated?
Question:
Answers:
I can tell you from experience that it does get worse over time without treatment. I live with bipolar disorder and have for many years. I didn't know what the problem was until the mid 90's. It had gotten bad then but still I wouldn't ask for help. This year I was so out of control I finally went to my doctor. Now I have good control of my mood and temper and have little depression. I encourage you to seek the help of a professional as soon as possible. It makes a great difference and saves you lots of pain. You can even be happy and living a normal life.

There are different types (or so they say now) of bipolar and some people can handle some mood swings without it interfering with their lives. Some of the most successful people in the world were just a little manic much of the time.
But generally, I'd say it could get worse. It's certainly not worth taking a chance on. It takes time to get to know what you can handle and what you need help with. It's OK to question your psychiatrist, get second opinions and do your own research on medications. In fact, I think it's better for you to do that. But get some kind of help.
I've also had a very dear friend commit suicide because he couldn't take it anymore- and he appeared so together most of the time.
Join peer support groups, too. Find out what other people are doing that works for them, and develop a support system of people who understand.
Get on NAMI.org and NMHA.org and find the local affiliates info. to find out what's available in your area. And see if there's a DBSA (I think I got that right- they used to be the DMDA in my day, I believe). And there are on-line forums at NAMI.org and About.com. I highly recommend them.
If you are asking if the "disorder" can get worse, the generally accepted answer is yes. However, what usually gets worse, if untreated, are the "symptoms" of the disorder. Left untreated, a severe depressive or manic episode, the two extremes of Bipolar disorder, can lead to suicide or high risk behavior(s) with potentially deadly effects.
I think it will. You should definitely get treated.
You should do as much research on it as you can since you are new to "our" world. since being on two severe emotional poles. your symptoms will get worse but since your new you may not realize it. I would talk to a therapist about this and they can give you more information about what treatment is best. mostly it will be a few pills you will have to take for the rest of your life. there is no cure for this. but u can control the symptoms depending on how severe your swings are. but just remember when you start taking meds u have to stay on them even when you feel great. because its the meds that are making you feel great and normal again. also don't feel bad if the meds don't work in some cases it can take a while to find the right combination. for me it changes every 6 to 9 months. not fun. also don't feel bad if u stop taking them just remember they are to help you. and get back on. hope this helps.
Bipolar is diagnosed if you have either mania or hypomania. I am not sure whether you have got those episodes. Without treatment, it could worse and if someone become manic, he or she could spend a lot of money and could become end up having a lot of debt. So it could have severe consequences.
