do anti-depressants have an adverse effect on university studies?

Try something in the SSRI variety. They are more stimulating. The older ones seem to cause more problems. You should be able to focus better not worse when you are less depressed. Go to an expert a psychiatrist. You can ask the doctor. Unfortunately depression comes on at this time and so does bipolar disorder. Try to get a proper diagnosis. If you are not fighting with your innerself you will probably be able to do better in school. Remember that doctors and counsellors and meds are all unique and the first try does not always work.

It is not your fault. You do not have to stay on medication if it does not work for you. You may find that they end your suffering however. Please realize this is not your fault and this age is a normal onset age for these issues unfortunately. It is an age when people are trying to be in school, start lives, be in the millitary, start families and have children and have careers and leave the safety of familiar settings. It is really unfortunate that it happens at this transition time.
Examples of SSRIs are Prozac most stimulating
Celexa, Lexipro and Zoloft
Ones to avoid are Paxil and Effexor because they have discontinuation syndromes that are like withdrawl to the people on them.
Another thing to try is Wellbutrin.

not for me, but not all anti-depressants work the same.
It depends on the individual. Anti-depressants may help you focus better, or they may make you feel like a zombie. There is no way of knowing unless you try them. In my case, they made me feel absolutely miserable and I had to stop taking them. They do help a lot of people, though. Talk to your doctor. Good luck.
In my experience - no.. they helped by decerasing my depression and anxiety.. however as an earlier answer says different antidepressants work differently for different people... And yes it is always a good idea to talk to your dr... and at the end of the day never stress, cos if one doesn't work there are a whole heap of others to try...
Good luck :)
