Are schizophrenics really considered to be crazy?

Question:
My family often falsely accuse me of being schizophrenic & crazy, & the Dr. didn't diagnose me as schizophrenic. Are they jealous because I'm the youngest & 1st person in the family to graduate from college? No one likes me. I have no one to turn to for love or support. Just tell me if or if not schizophrenics in general are considered crazy or if it's just a society label. My diagnoses are OCD, Generalized Anxiety Dosorder, & Tourette Syndrome. Do you think my family is just ignorant & don't understand my disability?

Answers:
it depends on how bad of a case of schizophrenia the person may have. I do agree that your family does not understand your diagnosis because tourettes syndrome and schizophrenia are very different diseases.

Other Answers:
Crazy is a lay term and not used medically. Schizophrenics are psychotic. They often hear voices or think people are out to get them, paranoia. Ideas of reference, thinking people are talking about you. etc. Was it a psychiatrist who said you did not have it. If not, get an opinion from one and throw it in their faces.
don't understand .

I lived near a boy who was deaf and mute his parents never bothered learning sign language (their son was taught it by a sign language instructor when he was young)... the parents didn't bother with it and had him write everything he wanted to say.
If you have OCD and Tourette's, you should enter into a psychopathic drug treatment and counseling. Anti-psychotic medication and other alternative therapies will help you. Schizophrenia is a documented personality disorder and is a disease. It should be taken seriously and anyone who suffers from it should be on medication. Your personal mental health can only be assessed by a professional, not by your family. It doesnt sound like you are schizophrenic, and even if you are, you aren't "crazy". You just have a mental disorder. Society labels mental health problems as being crazy because of ignorance and fear. You should research it more thoroughly and see a professional. Try apa.org or http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/schizophreniamenu.cfm. Good Luck and screw your family. Congrats on graduating college.
The doctor has diagnoised you according to your symptoms, tell your family "do u think u know more than my dr." people don't understand ocd and sometimes the things peoiple do would be considered wierd or crazy. take care of yourself.
There are many forms of schizophrenia. And none of them make you "crazy." I think "crazy people" are those who have a choice by consistently choose the worst behaviours.

Unfortunately, it sounds like your family doesn't understand your challenges. Even more unfortunately, they may never understand. Labels often lead to stigma-- which your family might be threatenned by.

It sounds like you're doing a great job overcoming! I hope you can look past your family's ignorance and continue to succeed.
