I have both worked in and visited psychiatric hospitals. If you go to a private hospital it isn't as scary (depending on the ward). Yes you will see people maybe acting oddly or talking to themselves but the typical patient doesn't really stand out. When I interned at a local private facility I often could not pick out the patients from the staff when they were outside taking walks or smoke breaks. I worked on the children's unit and the majority of the time I felt like I was just playing with a bunch of kids. On the wards that treated schizophrenia or dementia you were hear some screaming or sobbing. But mostly it was just people sitting around playing cards, or watching TV. As for public hospitals, a friend of mine committed himself but due to lack of insurance he had to go to a public hospital. Since it was in a hospital there was only part of one floor devoted to the psychiatric patients. It was very crowded and everyone was kind of thrown together. You had people like my friend suffering depression sharing rooms with schizophrenics. He hated it there. People were sharing rooms with 3 or 4 other people. There was no privacy.
Even my friend's situation was not "scary" mental health facilities are not like what you see in movies. The most serious cases are typically isolated from the general population for safety reasons. You might see people acting out or yelling at staff but nothing more serious than you would see on a city street. If you know someone that is hospitalized please don't let your fear keep you from visiting. They need your support more now than ever. If you are thinking you need inpatient care talk to your doctor and investigate local hospitals to see what you can afford. Like anything else some are better than others.
Yeah I've been inside one (visting someone else but I wasn't admited myself) but yeah it can be a frightful place
