Possibly bipolar?
Question:
I guess all the symptoms fit. I go through months of depression that so bad I can't really get anything done. Last year I missed two weeks of school because it got so bad that every time I got out of bed I felt sick.
I have shorter periods (weeks, or occasionally a couple months) where I go out of my mind partying, taking on more projects than I can really handle. I go back and forth between extremely happy and just extremely irritable. I don't sleep at all. One time I was so into partying that I ignored strep throat by taking ibuprofen to prevent my throat from closing and killing me, and just have partying.
I have a sporadic temper. Occasionally I throw things, or instigate fights with people, or cut myself.
But other times, I feel totally normal and sane. The times I act like that seem so far away that I wonder if they're real.
Is this what bipolar feels like?
Answers:
stop drinking sodas; especially diet..and whatever else you drink when you party..You didn't say so, but are you doing drugs?..that will really whack out your system. Remember, life is hard...much harder when you don't give yourself the best chance. Don't eat junk food, get good meals/fresh juiced veggies/fruits. Lay off the punk rock music and calm your mind. Go to sleep at a regular(10pm) hour. Wake up normally (no alarm) and get out of bed..don't just lay there and think about how jacked up things are.. Do this for several months. Don't run out to get a pill to cure yourself and then expect to continue to party. The doctors just love it when they can get a patient to take a certain drug for life..they get a commission for each "sale", did you know? Their interest is not to cure you, but to keep you coming back for more.
If during those hyper stages you go for days without sleeping yet you are not on any kind of drugs, then yes you are bipolar.
Have your moods always been mercurial? Can you recall ever feeling balanced, centered?
Be very, very wary of medications your doctor(s) will want to prescribe. They are NOT for everyone. You are the expert on you; only you will know if a medication is right for you. Don't let others tell you what's best when it comes to introducing chemicals into your body and mind. Be very careful, OK?
Oh honey. Yes, you do have bi-polar disorder. Though its not as bad as you think. I've been bi-polar all my life, I just found out when I was sixteen. I've been medicated and I act normal when I'm on my medicine. When I'm not on it, I do the same thing that you described. I understand what you are going through. It makes you feel like you're going crazy and that you don't know what to do. Sometimes you feel like just ending it all, just to get away from all the feelings. But medicine helped me and so did going through years of therapy. If you need any more info you can contact me. I'm happy to help any way I can. :)
It sounds a lot like bipolar disorder. Many people who have it like the way they feel when they are on the "upswing" or they happy phase because they feel like they can get a lot done or feel really happy. However, if you read your comments, it sounds like you spend a lot of your time depressed, and even during your "up" times, you might not be taking the best care of yourself (like ignoring the strep throat to go out partying). Bipolar disorder can do that to you. It is not my place to tell you what to do, but I think if you look over what you wrote, and think about how you feel, maybe you will want to reconsider what your doctors told you? If you want to start feeling better, you might want to consider letting the doctors start treating you for bipolar disorder. It might help even out your moods, so to speak, and maybe you will feel less depressed. I wish you luck, whatever you decide to do.
Welcome to the club. The depression part sucks because I already suffered from depression. But you just gotta surround yourself with uplifting people. I notice that I get all depressed and Bipolar when Im alone, even if its to use a bathroom.
You sure do fit the description to a T.
My son has severe bipolar disorder (he may even be schizo-affective), but since he got on the right meds he feels normal 99% of the time. The rest of the time he can fake it when he's away from home, so it doesn't interfere with his friendships.
It can be hard to keep trying meds, waiting for side effects like fatigue to pass, and so on. But it's so worth it once you find what you need!
Get thee to a nice psychiatrist who you trust and who wants to work with you. Give it a try. Find a therapist and/or support group, too. And then you can enjoy life again. :)
OK, bipolar is the extreme highs and lows. One minute you will be extremely depressed, the next minute you are happy, anything can set you off for no apparent reason. When you are bipolar you tend to go on spending sprees, like going out shopping spending money you don't have, like charging things on credit cards, etc. then later regretting the spending sprees. Bipolar people can also stay up at days at a time and it not effect them at all. They do have temper tantrums too, such as throwing things too, but the thing that got me was the cutting, I am 34 years old, and have been cutting since I was 11 years old, still doing it. I had similar symptoms all along and the doctors had said I was bipolar, a lot of doctors miss diagnose people, they often tell you you are bipolar when you are not. In my case cause of the cutting, which the reason most people cut is because of some kind of child hood trauma, rape or abuse. In this case it is named PTSD, which is post traumatic stress disorder. Finally I had gotten a good doctor and a good therapist who realized what was going on with me. That helped me a lot, I hope this helps you, good luck!
