Having difficulty of breathing can be quite frightening. You may also feel very panicky. It will be good to understand which comes first. (i.e. Anxiety -> breathless; OR Breathless -> Panic)
People having anxiety attack may 'over breathe' and become breathless. If you do have shortness of breath and you get panicky, calming down will help you to feel more in control of your breathing.
Tips on how to cope with sleeping
- it is easier to breathe if you are propped up a bit - raise your head on pillows or raise the head of your bed
- if you cannot sleep or are very breathless when you wake, try the breathing relaxation exercises
- keep a stool or chair and a small table in your bedroom: if your breathing gets very bad in the night, sit up on the side of your bed, rest your feet on the stool and lean your head and arms forward, resting on pillows on the table
- open the window or have an electric fan on a low setting overnight
Take care!
yes, anxiety can do that to you, it would be very extreme anxiety but it can happen. it's anxiety attacks, and if you have a history of this and no other symptoms, then that's most likely what it is.
It sounds like sleep apnea. Where you actually stop breathing in your sleep. However, you really need to see another doctor. Honestly, I have never heard of someone stop breathing in their sleep and it be from anxiety. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, I just have not heard of it. But definitely see another doctor. Sounds like he just blew you off.
In the past I had bad anxiety every night and I woke up feeling like I couldn't breathe. That being said, a Dr. should listen to you. If you don't feel like he gave your concern adequate attention, you should let him know. Ask him to perform a physical test. If you're still not happy, find a new dr. who you feel listens better.
See another doctor that will do a more thorough exam. I have struggled with anxiety for what seems like forever but his opinion was too quick. I've learned that when some doctors hear mental illness and/or anxiety they immediately come to that conclusion. Another doctor can, at the very least, rule out other conditions. Thus, having a little less to be anxious about.
