WHAT ELSE IS AVAILABLE FOR DEPRESSION BESIDES meds?
Question:
Answers:
Psychotherapy.
exercise is your best cure for depression.. releases endorphines that boost your "happy" emotions...
You can also buy those lights that are supposed to simulate sunlight...my mom and sister use them in the winter...
A complete lifestyle change. Go for a walk and smell the roses.
counseling can usually help alot, and depending on the kind of depression, just getting out in the sun more and eating healthier, staying active, their are alot of things that can help, if you talk to a counseler he/she will give you plenty of help and ideas to make you feel better
They say to exercise, even it is just going around the block to take a walk, also to get a journal and write down your thoughts. Sometimes when you see it on paper in front of you,it becomes a lot easier to cope with.
My suggestion is to seek out a good therapist. If you do this, keep in mind that you may not "click" with the first one you see. Don't hesitate to try again.
As far as self-help...exercise is at the top of the list! I know when you are depressed this is a tough thing to get into, but even a short time each day is good. It doesn't have to be anything tough. Just a simple walk around the block. Or pick up a video you can do at home (Leslie Sansone has some good ones) Check out the local library!
Don't shy away from meds if that is what you need. Just be sure to have a qualified medical staffer to help you.
Good luck. Don't give up, you are not alone.
I very rarely get depressed anymore because of something a
dear friend told me. When you start feeling down, start counting the good things in your life. Be thankful for the smallest good things that come your way. A butterfly crossing
in front of you..a good cup of coffee. Anything that makes you smile...a fond memory, anything. It really works if you take the time to try.
Good Friends.
theres a good saying that goes something like this... "Tell me who your friends are... And ill tell you who you are". Your friends influence who you are.
Or do something you love to do to get a feeling of achievement deep inside. If youre lazy... do anything not to be lazy... keep clear of the downward spiral.
If you actually have depression, then the brain chemistry should be adjusted with meds, and with therapy. If that doesn't work than electroshock comes into play. "They" don't want to talk about that. It is not the same thing you've seen on TV.
I think what you need is relaxation and a friend to lean on. If you still feel depressed, you could always talk to me ^^
Find God and Jesus First. I notice in life that people that do not have a higher power are with out direction and meaning of life. Having spirituality brings a hole norther lever of life meaning and self worth. 96% Of of the worlds population believes in some sort of higher power. I would hate for you to be in that 4% of people non-belivers. I suggest my church its Chistian, 7th day Advenist. Put trust in the Lord and pray for answers. If you are a true to your self you will give the God way a chance. Drugs will not help. All so, you need to start reading self help material. marc
Counseling, go to counseling. Get help, but why not meds? Some of them work very well. Don't think about ECT. Its dangerous, its a pain and you'll lose your short term memory as well.
ECT is generally used only as a last resort, when the patient doesn't respond to medication.
There's also therapy, but if the depression is severe it's likely that therapy isn't going to help much without medication.
"Going for a walk" and that sort of thing can be helpful, but it's not likely to have a dramatic effect on clinical depression, that's more for people who are temporarily sad but don't really have a mental illness.
I also worked in mental health for 18 years, and I saw the best results when people chose a combination of treatments.
Medication to correct the chemical inbalance in the brain.
Exercise because it releases endorphins in the brain which is known to reduce the effects of depression.
Therapy to teach you how to cope with bad days, stress & relapse.
Exercise helps. Psychotherapy gives you tools to manage your life.
Relationships are great for support.
A good margarita helps you forget everything. (check with your doctor first, he might suggest a Long Island Ice Tea)
NO MED'S ??
Do I understand you correctly?? You would rather have ECT vs. medications? ECT ( electro convulsive therapy) instead of meds?? Why?? Do you know/have any idea what you are asking for?? Have you discussed this decision with a medical professional?? Evidently, NOT. The risks of ECT are far worse than antidepressants. ECT is usually a last resort. Please discuss this with a medical professional before you make a decision.
Social support and psychotherapy (talking with your favorite shrink),,,it speeds improvement a LOT..
A positive attitude, and the awareness that you are suffering from something that MILLIONS of people on the planet are suffering from. and it is quite treatable and even curable (no body can guarantee there will be no recurrences) will be able to help you-----
ECT (electro convulsive Therapy) is used only in EXTREME cases, or those that o not respond to medication and /or psychotherapy..very rarely used nowadays in the USA and Canada, more used in Europe, under very special circumstances...

a good laugh everyday... try watching cartoons... those funny cartoons puts me in another world away from reality... temporarily but, it comforts me after a while... or you can think of a funny friend... hire him for one week to cheer you up... oh, and if you're a health buff, exercise... while laughing... hey, the world isn't that bad...
ECT is not for situational / mild depression.
It is used for serious mental disorders
It is a fact that exercise, diet and some herbals can relieve depression faster than taking medications.
Thank you for looking for another route than just to a PILL.
#1 write down what is bother you. School? Friends? Job? etc.. Change as much of it as you can.
#2 excersise, Get on a tread mill Bike ect, Lift weights, even light weights. Take supplements. Quit eating junk food. Stay away from any thing that has MSG, hydrogenated oils..ie store bought cookies, mcdonalds.
#3 Talk about it with some one who will listen, friend family counsler.
#4 This sounds far fetched but have read its supposed to help. You can get a device they use on sore muscles that send a very low electrical charge to message the muscles. Just like what they use on some ones back at a chiropractors office. .but put the receptors on your temple to stimulate blood flow to that region of the brain. I know it sounds nuts and I havent tried it http://www.pslgroup.com/dg/15131a.htm...
