Answers:
Get him to a doctor it might be dementia or Alzheimer's.
hm show him a new movie and get him obsessed with that. pesronally, that's not normal, he could slowly be going crazy..
Your grandfather most likely suffers of minor dementia; my advice to you would be to either have your family physician take a look and prescribe medication, or just let him indulge in his fantasy (unless it endangers him or others around him). Besides, Gandalf is kickass!
First of all have a little patience and compassion. He's getting older for sure, but perhaps he's just play acting. I do this to an extent and I'm only 32. As people get older and see the end of their life nearer, they pull out the stops and do things they probably wouldn't normally do. ie buy sexier clothes, play games, read books non-stop, blurt out things that may seem tactless. In some ways it's a way for them to do things they never got the chance to do.
You may see it as kooky, strange, or annoying. But think to yourself how would you be when you realize your numbers about up? It makes you see the world in different light.
As for your grandpa as long as he isn't hurting anyone, I don't think it's a big deal. But keep an eye on him to make sure he isn't getting delusional (and a bit of role playing, even fictitious characters isn't necessarily delusional). Make sure he's getting plenty of water to drink as well.
My grandma was like that but she refused to drink water so she kept hallucinating saying she kept seeing little kids run through the house when there were none. She even claimed one took something of hers and it upset her to tears.
Just try to put yourself in his shoes, his situation. Maybe he just really likes Lord of the Rings and doesn't feel he should have to hold back on his urge to play.
I understand that it would be annoying to those around him but come on! He's 86, let the old guy have some fun.
He's had a long life, let him enjoy the last bit of it.
