Self harmers (specifically cutters) only please?

Question:
when you've cut, do you find that the direct area around the cut swells up, and that the cuts itch? or is this because i don't break the skin properly - i don't cut deep. i've had this a a lot recently, but the cuts aren't infected and they stop swelling and itching the next day. could my knife being blunt be part of the problem? what's causing this?

Answers:
When the skin barrier has been penetrated and opened, the body goes through a natural inflamatory process to try and keep out bacteria. The itching is from the scab forming.
That happens because that's your bodies natural response to cuts, scratches, and things of that nature.
Next time use a chain saw.
Heres an idea, go to a doctor and get on some medication for your personality disorder, maybe? There is no good way to cut yourself. Get some help.
I haven't cut in a very long time. I figured out why I cut and I guess that helped. It helps you realize you can actually feel something besides mental pain. If that makes sense. Now I'm not going to sit here and tell you how to cut yourself differently, but any cut whether it's deep or shallow is going to swell up and itch. It is your bodys way of going into healing mode. I have demons and when I cut I don't ever realize that I've done it until the next day when my arms are usually still bleeding. I don't know if they burn or swell. But it doesn't hurt either.
Red, hot, itchy and swelling means that it's got a slight allergy to something either on the knife or on your skin (that gets into the cut). Part of it may be typical of a cut, but if it gets unusually itchy, it usually means there's an allergen. Do you have cats? Not much you can put on it other than antibiotic ointment until it heals closed.
I've totally had this problem. I guess it's just a normal thing. It's good that you don't cut too deep because I have quite a few ugly scars that hurt or itch a lot when I go out into the sun for some reason. I use triple antibiotic ointment or neosporin (spelling?) on my cuts when they itch. I try not to scratch because scratching just makes the cuts open again and take longer to heal. Also, I've found that if you wash your cuts really good with soap and water after you cut helps with pain.
I'm not going to harp on about self-help, I know exactly what you're going through. Cutting is a crux, and sometimes, no matter how rational you try to be, and you go through all the other options, you just have to cut and bleed the pain away.

Anyway, it is normal for the area to swell a little bit, especially on surface cuts rather than deep ones. It's a bit like when you get a tattoo- the direct area gets a bit hot- like it has a fever and swells. It could also be that the knife or other implement isn't very sharp also- however, I don't recommend you go get a razor blade as they are unbelievably sharp and will cut deep with little pressure.

People don't understand that cutting does not mean you want to die. It's a method of dealing with unbelievable emotional pain, although not the best method.

The cuts are getting a bit infected, wash them with peroxide or alcohol.
I have cut myself for many years and it is an addiction so I understand what you mean. I cut myself with razors and broken glass. It always hurts after so I try to apply germaline to the cut and cover it with a plaster. If my razor is blunt I find it makes my wound itch even more. I am trying to stop and I am taking medication. I know you are scared to recieve help but you are half way there already as you have admitted you have a problem with cutting.
Please don't cut, i feel your pain..and it hurts :(
this happens almost everytime. I use razor blades, and if I don't cut too deep, the skin recompansates from the physical attack it's just been under by swelling up. There's no problem, except for the obvious reason, you shouldn't be cutting in the first place. But who I am to tell you to stop, I cut everything, for several hours at a time.
why would you care about your cuts?!! if its causing you such trouble and your worrying about them getting itchy.perhaps cutting isnt for you:-s
dont ask for 'objects' that will do the job properly if your trying to stop.
No, I've never had this before. When I cut I go quite deep anyway, so this is never a problem. Using a sharper knife is safer believe it or not as you don't need to use more pressure and the cuts are more controlable. With a blunt knife you put more pressure on it trying to get the cut and it could very easily slip and cut an area you don't want to. I understand people are trying to help when they say get help, but unless you've been there and done that you can't really understand what it's like.

Always remember to take good care afterwards.
My cuts swell up around them whatever I use.I think it could just be the fact the skin is sort of slit open. But please if you don't cut deep don't start. It's not a good thing to be addicted to.
Hey!...
Yeah i often find this problem but more so when i pick at my skin to make "cuts"...Although they dont always get infected the area around the cut always goes red puffy and very itchy!...
I have no idea why!...But when this happens i normally apply a cream of some sort to the area around it!...Be careful not to actually get it in the cut tho!...It stings!!!
It could be due to ur knife being blunt or it could just be something else!...who knows!...
Remeber stay safe!!...I understand that you have to cut but remember to keep them clean and seek medical help if necessary!...
Take care and stay strong!...
