Do i have bipolar....please help?

Question:
I'm 16 and i'm afraid i might have ultra rapid cycling bipolar. I usually have many mood changes everyday. I'll go from happy to very angry to crying to depressed and back to happy in a day, sometimes it's in a matter of a couple days and more commonly a couple hours. This has been going on for maybe 6 months or so. I don't want to tell my parents that i'm worried, cause they probably won't take me seriously. I'm homeschooled so i can't talk to a school counsler. Could i have ultra rapid cycling bipolar? What do i do about all this?

Answers:
Hi I am not saying it is or is not bipolar but I can say at your age it could be hormones. symptoms of bipolar can be very like those of hormonal changes as a teenager. But and it is a big but when you are a teen and if it is bipolar you can rapid cycle a lot of the time. I know you can't seem to talk to your parents but it really would be the first step along the way and even if they will not listen at least you have tried to talk to them. the next step if at all possible is to get yourself to the doctors and tell him/her what is going on. Just speak out and keep speaking out until someone starts to listen to you.
Can you talk to a doctor alone - without your parents? You might want to look on www.webmd.com. They might have a questionnaire you could do and that may indicate if you are bipolar.
I think you read about it somewhere and thought "Hey, I'm moody. That must be me!"

Bipolar disorder is about more than moodiness. It's when people get so depressed they literally can't get out of bed. They can't eat, can't sleep, won't see or talk to anyone. And the manic part makes them so hyper and happy, they're excited and yelling and laughing and being obnoxious . . . difficult to deal with.

I think you're fine. Everyone has moods.
Maybe but as someone with bipolar this sounds more like your hormones are very out of whack. More than normal teenagers perhaps. Please talk about it with your parents as something simple as having you on the pill may help stabilize your mood. Best to investigate that first that assume bipolar.
It's hard to tell. Mood changes are part of adolescence, but dramatic mood changes are not. I think you have to tell your parents. I wish I had seen a doctor when I was your age. It could have prevented more heartache as I got older. Try to convince your parents to take you to the doctor. Even if you are just going for a physical, you can still tell the doctor your symptoms and see what he or she says.

If your parents won't take you to the doctor, you can call 301-443-4513. It is a mental health hotline by the Department of Health and Human Services, so it is reputable. They would be better able to give you advice than we would.
well i don't know b/c every girl has promblems like that sometime in her life(pms) i don't if they have it so much but i think u could have alittle but not too bad if that makes any since but go online and search for a counsler or doctor to talk to and if u end up do having it he/she can give u medication! good luck
I can't say if you do or don't have it, just based on this. And I doubt you could self-diagnose yourself in terms of bipolar (BP). It's not an easy thing to diagnose definitively. If you really have BP disorder I am fairly confident to state that things would be very problematic between you and your parents.

This is not a "given," but often teens who are having mania/depression tend to blame the people and events around them on their feelings (until they've had treatment). They don't usually pop up and say, "Hey, I think I have bipolar disorder!" I'm sure it has happened, but...

You may have some level of depression, mixed in with the normal crazy teen hormone changes. That's what I had as a teen. If I was in a very nice situation I felt wonderful, and I had moments of feeling good. But I also had some terrible times like you describe. I am sure that the way my parents handled things didn't help one bit, and contributed to my awful state of mind.

Are you going to be seeing your family doc any time soon? That really is the first person to talk to. Tell him you have been feeling depressed. Since you think your parents won't take you seriously I assume that things are difficult with them, and then you are homeschooled to boot. I feel for you!!

Soon you'll be 18. Probably going away to college would be nice, wouldn't it? Try to get good grades and go live on campus. That's what I did.

Hang in there. xoxox
it may or may not be bipolar disorder. i think with bipolar disorder the manic mood lasts for days or weeks and then the depression kicks in for days or months. im not sure that they are supposed to last for hours. you could very well be depressed. you can not diagnose yourself trust me. please talk to a doctor.
No, it actually sounds more like a hormonal imbalance to me. Bipolar is much more serious than what you're describing. And since you're 16, I wouldn't doubt for a second that your hormones are kind of messed up.

Especially since you know the terminology so well, it sounds to me like you have simply self diagnosed. And that is a very dangerous thing to do.
