Question:
I'm 16 and i've had on and off depression for a while . Like i'll be depressed for a week then it will be gone for a couple days then i'll depressed again for a couple days then it will be gone again for a like 2 weeks, and so on. Sometimes i won't be depressed for many months and just out of the blue i'll be depressed for a short time and then it will just goes away and usually doesn't come back for many months. Everytime i get depressed i get suicidal. What could be wrong with me? Mental disorder/illness? What do i do about it?

Answers:
I've had that problem, and for me it was linked with my anxiety disorder, and stress. What you need to do, as scary as it sounds... is talk to your parents. Tell them everything about how you feel, even the suicidal feelings. I know how hard that is, but they are the best ones to help you out. Tell them you want help. See a doctor, because this is not probably just going to go away. Depression is a medical problem, not a character flaw, there's nothing wrong with you, its just the same as getting sick. And you can make it better.

Don't let ANYONE tell you its just in your head, or ignore it and it will go away, if you feel suicidal call someone. A friend, a teacher, a parent, a hotline, ANYONE.
think about others, not yourself all the time
You're a TEENAGER, that's what's wrong!

Your hormones are going cuckoo all over your body, causing wild mood swings. Just hang in there--in a year or 2 you'll stabilize & become human again.
im not really sure, but i know how u feel. but im not sure if you get depressd for no reason or not, but i would hav thort there was som reason ffor it and you hav to find that reason befor you can tackle it. for example i mainly get depressd when somthing happens between me and my girl friend which is bad, and stuff. but yeah so find out what the problem is and then try to do somfing about it. and when it coms to the sucidalness, try to go to sleep wenever u feel like that, or listen to music and try to sleep, and jus distract yourself. how this helps...
You could have a chemical imbalance. I was like that and decided I needed to be normal again so I got on Lexapro...worked wonders. I am happy and stable and I enjoy every day. Does this run in you family?. My Dad has the same chemical imbalance as I do.. and we both learned to talk about our issues no matter how silly or hard to talk about. Don't let your mental state destroy you. Get on something..and also get a notebook and when you feel blue wright all your feelings down. If you don't want any one finding in fear someone might think your crazy.burn it. It feels good and you do feel better after. Alot of people suffer from this...you are not alone. Get some help some way.
Good luck!
I'm really sorry to hear that; I struggled with anxiety and depression for years so I can totally relate. I don't know all of your situation, so it's kinda hard to completely answer it. You said it's on and off...is there something that triggers it? (A memory or maybe something someone said?) I know for me, it was when I got to thinking too much and my problems would weigh me down. I had to make myself get out of the house, take a walk and ask God for help. I know for sure that if you're having suicidal thoughts, the WORST thing is to be thinking too much. I was told by a doctor that I would think too much, get anxious (either nervous or excited) and then get depressed; my feelings would get me so hyped up and then there was this lull. And as cheesey as it may sound (some people would laugh), the only way I got better was by thinking about good things. I opened up my Bible and read good verses from Psalms. When I had panic attacks, those calming verses did wonders. So don't get so focused on negativity-get some positive thoughts in there and you'll really be surprised! Wrapping up, I would say do that and even ask a doctor if you have anxiety/depression...the two can be interlinked. There's nothing wrong in asking questions to get help.
i've gone through that to.
you should try to find a counselour.
they can evaluate you and tell you what is wrong.
my brain cells werent producing enough of something which was causing me to feel sad every once in a while.
she said that in order to help produce what i didnt have enough of (im sorry, i dont remember what it was called), you can do a few things.
you need to eat right, and not skip meals or anything.
you need to excersize because its not only to tone your body or lose weight, it also helps your brain.
and you need to get out into the sun. the sun can brighten anyones day.
whenever you just start feeling depressed, go outside and sit in the sun and listen to some music that makes you happy.
:)
There is a difference between depression and teenage mood swings. It may seem tough right now but one of the best ways to combat those down times is make sure you are doing something. Sitting alone in a dark room thinking about everything that is wrong has never been a solution to any problem.
There is a pervasive attitude to try and throw medication at a problem all the time. I returned from Iraq and I dealt with some survivors guild and depression for a while. I tried the meds the VA gave me but in the end I liked feeling like myself and found out that if it ever got bad just to focus on all the good things I had. Even if that list was short I still focused on it.

Life will be tough, never let anyone tell you any different. Keep your head up and never let anyone bring you down, especially yourself. We can be our own worst critics sometimes.
You could have clinical depression, or possibly bi-polar/manic depressive syndrome. Either way, if you are becoming suicidal, you NEED to seek medical attention. If you don't want to see a psycholigist/ psychiatrist right off, at least see your family doctor. Depression is a disease. Just like seizure disorders, most times it involves a chemical imbalance in the brain. Yeah, it's tough being a teenager, but when you feel so bad that you consider harming yourself or others, PLEASE get help! You are not alone!
At first I thought you were just a normal teenager, because bouts of "depression" for less than two weeks are a VERY normal part of adolescence.

However, suicidal thoughts are very serious and need to be taken seriously. You may have rapid-cycle bipolar disorder...short periods of depression followed by short periods of mania. I recommend you tell a doctor ALL of your symptoms so that he or she can make a proper diagnosis.

In the mean time, any time you feel suicidal, please call 1-800-SUICIDE. There are people there who understand what it feels like, and they can help you understand it better. Please, whatever you do, don't hurt yourself. Life is too important. I sincerely wish you the best of luck.
