I'm extremely worried about my sister. She has many emotional [psychiatric] problems. Is MIRTAZEPINE SAFE [AD]
Question:
Answers:
Most drugs available for prescription in 2007 are safe if used properly and appropriately. Mirtazepine is a well used and safe drug.
Read the warning label and "side" effects (direct effects if you ask me) of the drug - then decide for yourself if you feel it is "safe".
They give out a lot of drugs for depression and mood disorders like M&M's. MOst are over prescribed and not properly monitored. Like many of these drugs, they have side effects and can become addictive, or the reverse, quit working. Mirt is a strong drug. If she has eating disorders, chances are this is more a control issue, rather than a mental issue. People with eating disorders need to be able to control something in thier lives, and food is that something they feel they can. Its about child hood issues, did she feel like others constantly controlled her life? If so, you have the makings of a classic eating disorder in the making. They do get depressed, have a squed ourlook on how thier bodies look. It becomes a vicious cycle. Be kind to her, let her know you care, understand. Don't pander to her, be real. Johns Hopkins has a great eating disorder program, as well as a website. Take a look at it. But that drug must be monitored carefully, or they can easily overdose her.
Yes, many people find this a good antidepressant.
But do advise your sister to get an appointment with a psychiatrist, if she hasn't already; they are the experts with anti depressants and they really know a lot about the dosages etc.
Some people find that Mirtazepine makes them extremely sleepy. If your sister has problems with this, and it doesn't improve after about five or six weeks, she should ask her doctor about increasing the dose - it can be a less sedating drug in higher dosages - or about switching to another medication altogether.
But your sister should never alter the dose WITHOUT the advice of her consultant.
Mirtazepine is a safe drug and has been studied extensively before being released onto the market. Your sister sounds as if she is a bad way. Is she being seen by a psychiatrist Is she being reviewd regularly? Any input from counsellors or psychologists? Has she tried CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) ?. Also has she been put in touch with an eating disorders clinic?. If you live in London there is an excellent eating disorders clinic called the "Phoenix Wing" at St Annes Hosp, Tottenham, North London.
yes mirtazepine is a safe clean modern drug!
You sound like my sister. I am on mirtazepine and have been on it for around 10 days or so. I have found it makes me sleepy and dosey, and I keep dropping things. Haven't really had any other side effects which is great as citaloopram made me very obsessive (kept thinking about hurting myself for 2 weeks after going onto the drug).
Just be there for her, but don't crowd her too much as she'll still need room to breath. Good luck and I hope she gets better.
Hi ive had many anti,d,s and can honestly say that mitrazapine has been fantastic! Makes you very sleepy at first but that wears off ,you do get a great sleep with it tho,and for people with eating disorders its the 1 as it actually makes you feel hungry, certainly saved my life good luck!
Mirtazepine is a relatively new AD. introduced in 1997 and classified as an A-Typical AD. My girlfriend is like your sister and is generally stable on it until something external pushes her over the edge and then she is hospitalized. She has spent 8 months in hospital after her divorce gave rise to an "unconcious" suicide attempt. Until this she seemed fine on it despite her serious medical conditions so I hope they intend to keep her with it in the long term. Further to the above she described it as feeling like Mr Soft (off the Softmint advert) when she first started taking them. Could be worse I suppose.
