Does a physcologist or physciatrist have a md. degree?

Question:
im still wondering if my sons "dr." has a degree in medicine or if hes just a counselor. did he take a few years in medical school?

Answers:
Psychiatrists are medical doctors and can prescribe medications.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medicine.

A psychologist can not prescribe medicine.

Lots of other people can have a doctorate in something other than medicine.

Ask the doctor (if your son is a minor). You have a right to know. If your son is an adult, he should ask.
Psychiatrist have a MD degree, but they can also have a DO (doctor of osteopathy) but they are the same thing.
A counsellor or a psychologist is great! They help you work out your thoughts & feelings.

Psychiatrists prescribe medications to alter your thoughts and feelings.

The only one that has an MD degree is a pyschiatrist. The means that he is able to prescribe medications to people plus is knowledged in various medical problems to assist the patient in counseling.

Clinical psychologist have Ph.D's and cannot prescribe medications.

When in his room, look on the wall for his credentials. I always do!! and...ask him?
Look at your bill. If there is an "M.D." after your provider's name, he/she is a physician/psychiatrist. If there is a Ph.D. or Psy.D., your son's provider is more likely a psychologist.

Although it is the case in only two states (NM and LA), some psychologists can legally prescribe medications (and legislation is pending in other states, as well). Generally speaking, however, psychiatrists (i.e., M.D.s) are the mental health providers who write prescriptions.
A psychiatrist has a medical degree. He has gone through the regular medical program that all medical doctors go through and has completed a residency in psychiatry. Medical school and a residency in psychiatry does not typically prepare psychiatrists to be psychotherapists.

A psychologist has a doctoral degree (about 4 years of course-work after undergraduate, plus dissertation, plus 1-2 years of supervised clinical work, plus licensure). PhD programs in clinical psychology are actually harder to get into than medical school, so even if his doctor is a psychologist and is not a medical doctor, he is still very well educated and trained.
