What should I do?ive already lost a sister!?

Question:
my baby sister (19 yrs. old),went to the hospital to get recommendation to see a doctor that handles depression. instead, they sent her an hour away from family in a psychiatric hospital.before she was transfered to the psychiatric hospital; she was told she'd be in for 3 days(72 hours) before release at the first hospital. when she had gotten to the psychiatric hospital she was told two to five weeks. she's afraid! i don't think that the doctor where she went first made the right choice.i think they should have recommended her to a psychiatrist for so many days a week or whatever. now she's scared because of the way they treat her and the people there.
this place looks like it is for the insane and she isn't insane. we had lost our sister in december '06'and she had been down about it.i don't think she needs an inpatient program for that!she had never tried to kill herself or anything. she's normal trust me ive known my sister all her life.if she isnt out by friday, what should i do?

Answers:
Unless she's been committed, she can leave at any time. Just go get her! If they won't let you get her, go see a lawyer!
wow
call the police, she should not have to be there if she didnt say she is going to kill herself. get her out of there now! those places are really bad, I know because my cousin was in one she was hurt real bad. please get her out.
If she wasn't ordered into the hospital by a court then the hospital has to release her. A mental hospital cannot keep a person if they are not legally committed by a court order. She should be able to check herself out at anytime. Consult a lawyer and have them ready to approach the hospital with you.
get legal help, they don't have any right to hold her against her will. If she's not a harm to herself or others, there's no reason she should be there in the first place. You are absolutely right, the first doctor went over board.

Sounds like all your sister really needs is a grief counselor, not a psychiatrist.

So, get on the phone, find a lawyer, get the police involved and get your sister out of there.
If she was not baker acted then a family member shoudl be able to get her out... But she is 19 she is an adult adn if she went in on free will and only by doctor recemendation she can leave anytime. Check your state laws though they might be diffrent those are Florida laws.
No one has to do anything they don't want to do. She can just go see a psyciatrist a few days a week if thats what she wants to do. If she needs a referal for insurance puposes then she should see a different doctor at his office. I'd at least get second opinion. I'm wondering why she went to the hospital though if it was bad enough to go to the hospital then maybe she does need to be in the psychiatric hospital. But I do know that unless she is deemed incompitant or whatever and someone else has power of attorney over her then she doesn't have to go if she doens't want to.
Man im sorry dude, if they have her in a place like that then you should maybe talk to her and see if she wants to stay with you, if she hasnt done anything to herself or others then you have all rights to get her the hell out of their, she is an adult. If you think you can help her deal with the stress then i think you should take her in and maybe try some antidepressents. All i know is if i was in a psychiatric hospital and i wasnt crazy, i think i would start going crazy
sorry not much help, but good luck and i hope every thing works out
Get a good human rights lawyer
and kick some psychiatiric butt !!
These guys are whacko !!
