Psychiatrist problems?

Question:
I have alot of anxiety, anxious thoughts and restlessnes. I've used ativan in the past and it has worked tremendously, I calmed down and was able to feel relaxed. The problem is that my psychiatrist will not prescribe me it because it is addictive. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I may be able to get ativan for my extreme anxiety?

Answers:
seems like your psychiatrist is right...you sound addicted to ativan...what does your extreme anxiety make you do? has it lessened?does it lessen ONLY when you take ativan? are you extremely anxious when off of it.tell your psych how u feel now...how well u responded to ativan..ask if there are any non addictive drugs out there that can be prescribed for you...ask..ask ask and you shall be answered.
smash you car up with your fists
If your psychiatrist will not prescribe you the drugs, there is probably a good reason for this. Probably because they feel they might hinder your recovery in the long term.

Unfortunately, drugs are only a short term solution to an underlying problem.

Perhaps they could give you something which helps a little, but is not so addictive. For example I take Citalapram for my anxiety and although I am still extremely anxious some of the time, I can see the effect.

I hope this is of some help.
do what the drug addicts and Senior citizens do when they need help. find another doctor.
There are other meds your Dr. can prescribe for anxiety...ask him. Ativan is meant for short term use because you can become addicted and dependent on it.
you can switch over to an other salt with the help of your psychiatrist.
Perhaps you can talk your doctor into giving it to you on a cyclic basis with another anti-anxiety medication. Maybe 3 days with Ativan and 4 days with BuSpar, then back to the Ativan.

You might want to check into anti-anxiety methods like behavior modification, relaxation techniques, online support forums, etc.
i think you must help yourself do not depend on ativan... you can help your self by having enough rest, good sleep and nutritious food. you must not think so heavily. avoid strenous activities, socialize and make your self having a ghappy day.
drugs are just chemical, they are nnot helpful...
You can always go to your regular family doctor. My regular doctor prescribed me with Lexapro and Xanax, not my psychiatrist.
Ativan is typically only used on a short term basis or as needed because it is addictive. Ativan is a benzodiazepene (sp?) in the same class of meds as Xanax, Valium, etc. Often if taken for too long, your body will build up a tolerance to it and you will need more and more to get the same effect which leads to addiction over time. You should talk to your doctor about alternatives to Ativan that can be used for longer term anxiety treatment. Some will prescribe antidepressants or other anxiety medications that are less addictive and can be used for longer term treatment. You should (while still on the medication) look into as much self-help and support as you can to take care of yourself as best as you can. Good luck.
