What can i do to help myself concentrate better?

Question:
I make sure that there's nothing to distract me, like i make sure the tv is off, and things like that. I just always end up thinking about random things in my head other than my work when i'm reading, i can never get myself to do work!! I end up having no idea what i read, because my mind was somewhere else.

Answers:
Contact a psychiatrist and get tested for Attention Deficit Disorder

Healthy breakfast:

I read somewhere that the most brain damaging habit is not to have a breakfast. After the overnight fast and lack of glucose in the body, it is imperative to consume some protein and fiber rich food products. When I used to stay with my parents, there was not a single day that I missed my breakfast and all credit goes to my mother. But since I have been staying on my own, I have become more and more negligent. Running our body on low fuel till noon is not good. So, start having a healthy breakfast and get a good start for the day.

Limit TV:

Control your TV watching. If you observe your TV watching habits, you will realize that mostly it is waste of time. But that is not the only problem. All the programmes on TV show ads in every 15 minutes, so it breaks the continuity. Also, most likely you have a TV with a remote controller and your fingers are always playing with it skipping channels and surfing back-n-forth. This increases fidgetiness in your behaviour and it affects other aspects of your life too. I have reduced TV watching by restricting myself to 2 hours of TV per week. And when I want to watch more, I just rent a movie and watch it without a break.

Limit internet use:

This is easy to say but difficult to do. It depends on how much necessary it is for you to be online to get your work done. Most of the time, either I am searching for articles for my research or looking for some solution to software bugs. But now, I have made it a habit to print the article of my interest, leave my cubicle and read it somewhere where I don’t have access to net. But still many times I see myself using refresh button unnecessarily in the middle of some task. I am still looking for efficient ways to reduce the effect of this distraction.

Take time-outs:

Not just simple breaks but rewarding breaks. I reward myself with sunshine by going out for a walk after getting a task done in the lab. Breaks are generally distracting unless they are for a purpose. So, give a purpose to every break even if it is just talking to a colleague or checking your emails. You need to figure out what you need to do in your time-out to get a fulfilling break.

Read books:

Reading definitely increases your attention span. Read what interests you but try to avoid short stories. If I find some interesting novel/book to read, I find myself sitting for 5-6 hours straight without any breaks even if the TV is on.

Get close to nature:

This I accomplish by taking walks during my breaks, or taking a weekend off for some outdoor activity like camping. Attention span is mostly affected by stress, most of which comes from external sources. When you are with nature, you tend to go back into your natural state which is free from any kind of stress, worries or/and anxiety because that’s the way you were born.

Obviously, you can see how the same activities can help in other aspects of your life. We all already know these things but still don’t follow them. Why? Because we don’t assign a goal to them. Without a goal, we cannot measure our development. Here I am targeting to increase the attention span. You will notice the difference if you follow even some of the steps and it will motivate you further. Moreover, you will observe positive effects in other aspects of your personal development

you need to meditate
drink plenty of water through the day
Spend 30 minutes each day doing puzzles, especially word search or suduku type. They will help your memory and concentration.
make sure you are not hungry and drink more water generally...water keeps you hydrated...and that includes your brain. Make sure the room is well ventilated and that you have frequent breaks.people can only concentrate for 20 mins on one thing...if you take a short walk or stretch between reading bouts it can really help.
maybe do 5 to 10 min of exercise before starting to do your work.

If it's homework- trying taking notes or high lighting as you read- that will help too!
stop thinking about boys and get on with what your supposed to be doing
Just don't think about anything else.Just think about what you are doing or example reading about.
during my uni days
we had classmates with adhd
and what we did during examination periods
took their medicine (ritalin)
wow.. we transform to super duper studious hardworking students... concentration level at least 90%

but ya it's a bad way.. now that i recall.. it seems we kind of cheated, lol
I agree with the person that says drink plenty and i would add, eat fish, not oily fish or fried, try poached and exercise, go for a walk before studying. set times for study and stick to them, reward yourself afterwards. All in all, diet and exercise and a regieme of study.you can daydream while walking before and after studying.Goodluck.
I believe there has being studies that prove fish oil helps with concentration and of course as lots of people have said keep well hydrated.
try white noise, i had A.D.D. (attention deffecit disorder) as a child ,which i discovered later in life i still have.
I never used drugs to concentrate, but when i was re diagnosed they told me that i found ways to help myself concentrate.
If i do have to study if you study better at starbucks go there, if you study better in a park go there, i use white noise, for me what works best is a radio tuned to mexican stations. I do speak spainish but not well enough for me to get all the words. the noise makes it so i dont pay attention to other noise. i also read that some people have their T.V's tuned to play just static (just white screens) the static noise turned down to where you barely here it helps you focus on the task at hand. Their are also machines created just to help people like us, some make static noise while others play nature sounds

i hope this helps, if stray thoughts interupt you, my wife used to stop her homework and write down what was on her mind, this usually let her mind relax and focus

if you are in college go to your cousoler, get tested for a learning disability. I did this too late and i could have stayed in school, by the time i found out i was already kicked out for bad grades, i had to go to another school, If you qualify you can get help , maybe even Ritalin (only take this if you are really bad at focusing), which helps you focus,
good luck
i have the same problem. the solution is to TAKE breaks when studying. 20 or 30 min of hardcore studying then just goof around watch some tv, just do something else for about 15 min then come back and see what you remembered. you could be surprised. being concentrated takes alot of work, think about it when you study you find your self having a good motivation of getting ur work done , but then u just wonder off into space, its because ur brain needs to process the information u just learnt. it cant remember the whole lesson in a go. think of it this way, u r trying to remember a dictionary, you wouldnt do it all in a big gulp, you would break it down in small chunks. its the same way you study.
hope that helps
It's just a matter of self-discipline. There's not magic, it's just you disciplining yourself to do what you need to do. It's a skill you need to learn.

You might have a checkup for Attention Deficit Disorder. Oftentimes girls are not diagnosed properly in school, because they are not noticed due to their "good", quiet behavior. If you are in school, ask for a Special Ed. evaluation. If you are an adult, you can get a similar evaluation at a Psychologist or Psychiatrist's office.
Meditate baby meditate, it concentrates the erm oh the erm aha, what was i saying? oh yes! it concentrates the mind!

It does work honestly try it for 10 years and see...
meditate, take up yoga. I t will be a slow and legnthy journey but you will never regret it.
