Should you get help for social anxiety and depression?
Question:
Answers:
First of all, you should not see that doctor who told you to get over it. She is not a good doctor, has no proper bedside manner and is probably like that outside of her practice.
Social anxiety IS a recognized anxiety disorder, of which there are several.
You must get help. It won't suddenly disappear. Cognitive behavioral therapy as well as medication together can be very effective. You will probably be gradually exposed to various anxiety-provoking situations, but by doing so, you gradually lose your fear. It's ironic that to get well, you need to do the things that have made you 'unwell' in the first place. When you face the problems, bit by bit, you begin to squash the fears to the point that you can start to function properly again.
It will take effort and won't be easy. Can it be done? You bet! You can do this, so stay positive and focus on your goals. Good luck!
I am not a doctor or no where close to one. There is anxiety disorders so I can't imagine "social" anxiety not being something tied to that. There does come a time that one just has to take responsibility and make a change; not placing blame on something along the way.
HOWEVER, you need to try to talk with a psychiatrist about what you have been going through. Keep in mind that it may take a few different doctors in order to find the right "fit" for you. I personally don't believe one doctor fits all. Like I said, I am no way a doctor; however, with the right counseling (which everyone can use time to time regardless) and maybe a medication to help with the anxiety.that may help you.
Good luck with this, I imagine that it is frustrating; hopefully you can kick this in the butt soon! (remember too, this will take time; it definitely won't happen overnight) If you want to TRULY work on yourself given the right tools YOU'LL DO IT!

If the social anxiety and depression are severe enough to cause functional impairment and distress then yes you should get treatment. For me Zoloft helped with both my social anxiety disorder and depression.
Social anxiety is definitely recognized as a mental illness; it's called "Social anxiety disorder". It afflicts a great number of people, so you aren't alone!
If you don't have benefits it can be hard to treat, because usually the best results are found from a combination of anxiety medication and cognitive behavioural therapy. If your doctor doesn't take your illnesses seriously, then you should find a different doctor and see if they can prescribe you anxiety and/or depression medication, and look into seeing if there's any way you can get therapy to go along with it.
Hi there,
You can't be serious. No where in the world do I know of psychiatrists who take depression and social anxiety lightly. And if you mean should you see one for this diagnosis the answer is yes! Not even Donny Osmond or Rosie O'Donnell are strong enough to deal with these mental health challenges without long-term psychiatric therapy and meds.
You may only need however an out-patient status. This I believe would be better for you. Forget about the embarrassment it helps not.
Good luck and God bless.
