No. It is because psychiatrists and scientists have realized that Bipolar is a SPECTRUM of disorders, ranging from Bipolar 1 to Bipolar NOS (Not otherwise specified) which is a mild form of a mood disorder.
Truth is that very few people are being diagnosed Bipolar 1 which is the traditional manic-depressive. Most people are being diagnosed Bipolar 2 or Bipolar NOS, which are people who experience major depressive episodes.
I have been Bipolar 1 for over 10 years. When you think of a traditional Bipolar, I am it. I have been on bridges and on buildings yelling things, arrested for various manic episodes, etc. But that is NOT what is being diagnosed today.
Also, many people with Borderline Personality Disorder are given a diagnosis of Bipolar. Why? Because insurance will cover the cost of treating Bipolar, but may not cover the cost of treating a Borderline.
It does seem to be OVER-diagnosed for the most part.
People are manic, vicious & they want to claim bipolar.
It is probably just their upbringing.
Ild sure like to know too . Right after i was told I was ,all the sudden 1 wk before my friend was too I already had 1 friend who was .I was beginng to think we just all hang together. Now Im thinking its a control type thing~ alright so now Im paranoid .Im choosing not to do the drugs

I think mental illness even has its "fads". Like right now it is popular to be bipolar. What I see is that we have alot of people drinking and doing drugs and the things they do also qualify them to be "bipolar". The mood swings/depression and mania. What I think is sad is that if everyone gets that diagnosis the ones that really have it will be put in a category that its not a real diagnosis anymore.
I know! I personal now a whole bunch of people, a couple of my friends have it, and I am only 14! I have also read question on here were parents are talking about how there 3 and 4 year olds have bipolar, and I am just like wtf?
When I was growing up in the 60s Bipolar Disorder was unheard of. And I never knew anyone who had it. Nowadays, I know at least 10 people my age who actually have it including young children at age 6. When they're manic they really do scream and yell, jump up and down, and go without sleep for days and days. Then they're depressed for months and this cycle goes on and on. There's no cure but medication can lessen the episodes.
My boyfriend is Bipolar. Maybe the cause is drugs and alcohol from the 60s and it's hereditary so the kids have it. That's the only thing I can think of.

The reason is from alcohol and drugs.
Because it's only recently been really studied and validated as a disease. Frankly, MY MEDS ARE WORKING WONDERS!
AND NOT ALL MANICS ARE VICIOUS!! SOME HAVE MILDER FORMS LIKE ME WHO HAVE SPELLS OF BEING WIDE AWAKE , VERY FRIENDLY, TRYING TO TAKE ON MUCH MORE THAN THEY CAN HANDLE AND THEN JUST ONE SENTENCE CAN MAKE YOU CRASH. I TOOK ANTI DEPRESSANTS FOR YEARS BUT DID NOT FIND RELIEF UNTIL I TOOK MOOD STABILIZERS WITH THEM. NOW i FEEL LIKE A NORMAL PERSON FOR A CHANGE .FINALLY , I DON'T FEEL LIKE A COMPLETE FAILURE OR WANTING TO END IT..IT IS AND THEY WORK
well i believe most r just realizing that they r since more ppl r being honest with themselves -- think ur quest. is a little offensive.
