Answers:
Not a mother of 4 or more but ..
The post natal depression was caused by the reduction in progesterone you were receiving from the placenta. It makes 300-400mg /day in the the last 3 months of pregnancy. After birth women have varying times for their own production of progesterone to start again. Those that take slightly longer may end up with post natal depression.
You normally make 20-30mg/day progesterone during part of your monthly cycle. If the progesterone is limited for some reason you end up with hormone imbalance and depression is one of the symptoms.
This is the link to my web page regarding hormone tests in it there is a link to Miriam Brazel's page you may have other symptoms of hormone imbalance.

You are right to avoid anti-depressants search my web page for prozac any you will find it does not help your liver.
1 do an on line hormone test http://www.johnleemd.com/store/resource_...
2 do an appropriate saliva test and obtain results
3 get the results & discuss with a NPIS doctor or educate your GP/MD

I have no idea, I just love the fact that you've posted this in mental health!
not much advise, I just want to say I'm right there with you at this very moment! I'm hoping to get my medication increased and in the past I've used a topical progesterone cream when I'm PMSing and it seems to help.
Hang in there!
Depends on your age. It could be that you are still suffering from the baby blues. I had it worse after my fourth child. But, anyway, you should consult your Doctor.
You may still be suffering from some post-partum depression from the birth of your fourth child. It sounds like it is your hormone levels that may be causing your depression, as they peak and dip with each month.
Cycles can change after childbirth, if our bodies are stressed. It may take a few years for yours to get back to normal.
Look into Premenstral Dysmorphic Disorder. It is more severe than Premenstral Syndrome. Do some research and if you are still suffering, you may need to seek counseling and anti-depressants again, for a time.
Good luck, from a mother of four.
