Answers:
Try relaxing first,

A warm bath with some Johnson Baby Bedtime Bath (bubble bath)

Some lavender oil on your pillow or a lavender spray round the bedroom.

Maybe some relaxing tablets too (natural herbal remedy ones) such as calms.

Unfortunately there's no real way to turn off your thoughts...sorry!

***EDIT (AGAIN), an answerer below has suggested wine - I would abstain from alcohol, while it does help relax you, it encourages early morning awakening, and restless sleep too***
Four hundred years ago Shakespeare said, "It's a much troubled mind that knows no sleep." and it's still true today. Try chanting the following word: sharim. It's a mantra and will help you relax while you are in bed and what ever is troubling you get rid of it and move on.
One of the simplest and most effective tools is to have pen and paper by your bed. Write down what is on your mind. By putting them to paper, you release them until the next day when you can work on solutions. It may also help to verbalize as you write, "I release this to my Higher Power."

Lack of sleep is a health risk. If the above exercise does not help, by all means see your doctor. What you may need is a physical and a prescription for a sleep aid.

Best wishes and happy dreams.
If you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep
Lying in bed awake can make you feel anxious and even less likely to fall asleep. If you can’t get to sleep within 15 or 20 minutes after you go to bed, or if you wake up in the night and can’t get back to sleep, get up and do something relaxing. It can help to
• Read something light or listen to soothing music in another room. To avoid over-stimulating yourself, keep the lights low.
• Drink a cup of warm milk. Research shows that milk contains an amino acid that may help you get to sleep. And the acts of heating the milk and drinking it slowly in a dim room can help you feel relaxed and sleepy.
• Write it down. If something stressful is keeping you awake, try unburdening your mind by writing it down. Some people find it helps to simply describe how they feel. Others find it helps to make a list of the things they’re worried about or that they need to do.
• Do deep-breathing or other relaxation exercises. Try inhaling as you count to five slowly, and exhaling as you reverse the count. Some people find it helpful to relax each part of their body in succession, starting with the right foot, right leg, right shoulder, right hand, and so on back down the left side
Try a little wine ,or hold your breath for 30 seconds .
I have the same problems sometimes too, so what I do I just stared at the cealing, until I fall asleep! Or pray to GOD to help me go to sleep! Good luck!
