Switch from Depakote to Topamax (For Bipolar2)?
Question:
I have been told by ppl on other sites that it isn't used as a mood stabilizer and I need to get another opinion/dr. He switched me because of the weight gain of Depakote. Anyone have advice or take this for BP2???
I have been stressed out over this and need to know what to do here. I'm so miserable and my mind is going all over the place!

I've heard of this...one of the effects of Topamax is mood stabilization. People with bipolar are often put on mood stabilizers to even out their moods. My suggestion is if you are really concerned about it, talk to your doctor about your concerns or get a second opinion. Hope this helps.
I take Topamax for migraine headaches. I didn't know it was used to treat someone that is bipolar but it could be. It is actually an eplipesy drug. A lot of times drugs that are made for one thing are used for another. It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. You don't want to go on something that isn't going to work because it's very important to stay on your meds if you're bipolar. Maybe someone else knows more about this and can offer more insight. Good luck!
Why not?
"Depakote (divalproex sodium) is an anticonvulsant used to control seizures. It may also be used to treat migraine headaches, manic episodes, and other conditions as determined by your doctor."
I have never heard of it being used for bipolar however i take it for seizures, migraine headaches and the doctor said it is also used for weight loss. It just looked in my PDR and it only has topamax use for seizures ang migraine headaches.
