How do I find a hypnotist that is not a quack?

Question:
I've been to a 'hypnotist' before and all he had was anice voice. He didn't 'do' anything for me. I didn't even 'go under'. It was pathetic. I'd like to try hypnosis for an anxiety problem that I have, but I want a legitimate hypnotist this time. Please can someone tell me how to find one.

Answers:
Hmmm...that's like asking how you find a water slide that doesn't have water, or how you find a sauna with an air conditioner. THEY DO NOT EXIST.
ask a shrink. they know the good ones.
good luck

usually you can't separate the two words
hypnotist and quack

check hypno-therapist
still it's not something I'd spend much time with
Look for a certified hypnotherapist.

In hypnosis you don't go under like you do when you have surgery. You know what is happening. You are focusing on what you are experiencing in you mind.

Cognitive and Neuro Therapists both use hypnosis to help with problems of anxiety.

Regular, licensed (by the state in which they practice) psychologists (clinical, counselors) sometimes know how to use hypnosis in their sessions. Call around to the state psychological associations to see if you can find the ones who do use this technique. Just remember, some people can't be hypnotized for one reason or another. I've met some, and I am one who can't be put 'under'. Good luck.
I should clarify some of this, and say that your nearest university with a psychology department may be able to let you know of some of their graduates who may use hypnosis. Otherwise, the phone book lists "HypnoTherapists" and some of these are licensed clinical psychologists, who may charge less than psychiatrists. They should not be 'quacks'.
Contact your local National Guild of Hypnotists chapter and ask them. You can find a listing here:

I am wondering what you expected. Did you follow his instructions exactly or did you wait to see if something would happen ?
The fact that you failed means only that you failed. it is no way indicative of what will happen in the future. it also does not make the hypnotist bad..try again and follow the hypnotist's instructions exactly. the initial trances are very slight and you will not notice any changes. the hypnotist can see what is happening and direct attention where it will do the most good.
