Getting off paxil and switching to prozac...gut problems?

Question:
After being on paxil for 10 years, I talked with my psyc. doc. about getting off for good. He has prescribed prozac 10 mg. once a day. I've been on the prozac about five days and feel like **** but am trying to stick it out. My worst complaints are having severe stomach pain and a lot of gas, also lots of loose bowl movements and feeling ready to fly off the handle if anybody looks at me the wrong way! Also no appetite. I dropped from 40 mg paxil to 20 mg as I was having the thing with my heart feeling like it was racing all the time and not being able to sit still.

My question is had anyone had a similar esperience and what did u do about it? My doc. seems to get irritated when i call him about these problems, so will probably be looking for another one soon.

Answers:
Prozac is a weird medication. It makes me freezing cold when I first start taking it.
Stomach pains and diahreha can definitly be a side effect.
Tough it out, I promise it will get better in a couple of weeks.
Irritability is also a side effect.
Sounds like withdrawals from Paxil more than a Prozac problem. Stopping meds is a real *****. You actually are lucky that your doc thought to add the low dose prozac. Just the same, call your doc and tell what's up. Maybe ask for a benzo (Klonopin, Xanax...) for short-term. Ten years is a lot of time on the Paxil and it can be one of the harder ADs to stop.
