Hi,i've been prescribed citralopram for anxiety and am really scared to take it,any advise?am on propanolol 2.

Question:
i've read that many bad things about it on here,am really in two mind whether to take it.I suffer with panic attacks too,and think i may drive myself mad if i start them, but my doctor really thinks they'll help with pyscological side of anxiety,as i'm in a bit of a rut with it all,and i really want to get back to leading a normal life.Help. anyone in the same boat or been where i am?

Answers:
I went on Citralopram for 6 months and it really helped me. I find it difficult to breathe at times and shake and sweat and felt really anxious and the medication stopped all that. For the first few days it made me yawn a lot and made me want to stretch my muscles a lot but after that - i felt 'normal' without any anxiety symptoms. I came off them because i didnt want to be on medication for a long time, but i know i would definitely go back on them if my symptoms become worse again. I also take Propronolil to reduce my anxiety in stressful situations like meetings and presentations which i have to attend in my job - which i think works brilliantly as i have used these for approximately 6 years (only in certain situations) and it has helped increase my confidence.
I used to be on Citalopram. When I first started taking it it made me throw up every morning, but that went away after a couple of weeks.
Try it and see how it works for you, you could always try something else if you don't like it.
Hi Rodhullsroof
Be careful what tablets you take.
If you go to see a local Hypnoanalyst, it will cost you nothing for the first consultation, and can really help you get rid of your anxity without putting toxins in your bloodstream
give it a try because what do you have to lose?
Citalopram had hardly any effect on me and neither did I get side effects. It was risperidone that had me more agitated than a headless chicken.
I USED TO TAKE CITALOPRAM AND AFTER THE INITAIL PERIOD I WAS FINE ON IT IT HELPED LOADS BUT THEN I STARTED HAVEING ITCHING PROBLEMS (AFTER ABOUT 2 YEARS) AND THE DR REFERRED ME TO A DERMATOLOGIST WHICH SAID THAT CITALOPRAM CAN AFFECT THE LIVER AND CAUSE ITCHING AS A SYMPTOM SO TRY IT IT WAS GREAT AT FIRST BUT IF YOU HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS AT ALL GO STRAIGHT TO THE DR JUST IN CASE GOOD LUCK HOPE THEY WORK FOR YOU WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS
Honestly don't worry.I'm 19 and first started citalopram when i was 15.It works for some people. It's not a really strong drug so there's minimal side-effects.I never got any.

Good luck!
Hey

I was on citralopram, admittedly only for a couple of weeks as i didn't feel it suited my needs. I suffer from OCD and anxiety. I had no real bad experience with it. Ive heard some people experience side effects such as sickness and so forth and there are other side effects listed in the leaflet, but all the common side effects are i would say benign. I suggest you give it a try as i feel it would benefit you.

I would however treat it as a temporary measure to allow you to escape from your anxiety/feelings of low energy long enough to put in to place some positive plans of action and activities that will allow you to deal with your anxiety and depression (being stuck in a rut) in a none medicinal fashion. I feel that it is a bad thing to make these sorts of medication a long term answer to anxiety and feelings of depression.
I'm on Citalopram (been on it 2yrs), 20mg daily. It has helped enormously, and I continue to take it, only to keep me on an even keel. The only side-effects I've had were in the first 2 weeks- headaches and drowsiness.

I was on Propranolol and Prothiedon, 17yrs ago, for depression and panic attacks. Both of those helped, but I felt very drugged. Citalopram hasn't made me feel like that- in fact, I've not had any time off work for depression this time, and have still been alert enough to drive.

Try it- it may help a great deal
i know someone who took it only side effect was lack of sexual desire however they worked on the depression so worth trying them to see how u go particuarly if doc recommends them. good luck.
I take citalopram and so do my boyfriend and my mum - we've had nothing but good coem from it - my mum was reluctant at first but it has really turned her life around and we are all better for it - give it a go and see how you get on! All the best to you x
Hi,
I took citalopram for 6 months. Started on 20mg which was fine, no side effects and genuinely felt happier. Started to fade after about 3 months and I was put up to 40mg. This gave me bad stomach pains and I have now been taken off it. Don't be scared of trying it. If it works for you then it is great. I know all about the rut thing but just go with the flow and live each day as best you can. Time (the old cliche) will help!!
Hi mate i was on it for six months it really helped me.But please when you feel ok do not take urself off them i did and i get really bad depression every now and the it wont work 100% all the time you will still have your ups and downs try to think positive i was told that all the time it aint easy but try and try and u will see that it does work mate good luck you can only try.
try it
yes i am on this medication ,I feel ok, still have good and bad days
Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling bad. I would stick to the propanolol and try the following steps instead. They should eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks and anxiety:

1.Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really make a difference if you practise often enough (i.e. twice a day). They will also help you sleep better if done at bedtime. You can get free downloads online. E.g.: http://www.studentservices.utas.edu.au/c...

With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!
