Can u really understand depression?

Question:
If you have not being throught it yourself?

Answers:
No, I don't think you can truly understand depression unless you have been through it. Some people say they feel down or sad, but true depression is something else. i have suffered from depression since my Mum died 19 years ago, I have seen counsellors and tried anti depressants but nothing helped (I'm not saying that they don;t help, they just didn't work for me) I think it's hereditary as my Mum also suffered with depression. I deal with it by giving myself a good kick up the bottom, my husband isn;t very understanding at all, he doesn't even believe that depression is a real illness, he has led a very happy and contented life and has never suffered hardship, so it's very hard for him to imagine what I've been through in my life.
I think you can understand the principals but you cannot know the utter despair until you have experienced it!
YA.. if u have some one who u r really close to who has it its not hard to understand.
I dont think anyone can unless they have been through it. I would not wish that feeling on anyone. I hope you are ok
To a point you can. But it's one of those illnesses that can only be fully understood if you have been directly affected by it !! :)
i honestly dont believe that anyone can truly understand the depth and true despair that depression can be unless youve been through it yourself. theres only so many textbooks that can be read and regurgitated, but without the personal experience, theyre just words.
you can empathise but not really understand it.

i thought i did until i actually started suffering depression. nothing could have prepared me for what it has done to my life (and those around me). i have a much greater understanding of what other people suffer, now that i live with it myself.
I don't think so. Even if someone you are close to has experienced depression, you haven't seen the despair and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness through their eyes.
i found its a difficult thing to understand it when you are depressed, but in the end depression is just a continual low and i think everyone has had a low point during their life.
I think if the person has experienced it then they truly know what you are going through.
Been there many times! so I understand it deeply..
I found it impossible to explain the depth of despair at a pit that seems to get ever deeper, but you can pull out of it I could explain if requiered
i think u most b some wierd human being or mentall or somebody that has taken time to train there brain to never have gone through some type of depression at least once in there lives. i suffer from long term depression, i understand it to a certain extent but i also think its as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. contradicting myself it is a very deep and dark subject, e.g. is a concious or subconcious, or cause youve been diagnosed with depression does it mean you have it forever. i think everybody has there own type of depression therefor its an induvidual personal thing to grasp and understand, so u might understand your own but never anybody elses. from lion
I think you can only understand depression properly if you suffer or have suffered from it yourself
I don't think so. When I was a kid I used to wonder how people could ever be depressed in this glorious world. Then puberty kicked in and i've been miserable ever since.. and whoever put this idea in our head that it's cool to grow-up is a complete moron!
you can have an idea of what that person is going through if they talk their issues over with you but unless you have your own personal experiences you will never be able to see the world through their eyes, thus understanding how it feels tol go through depression..
I don't think you can truly understand depression until you go through it yourself. Its hard to get over to people who haven't been through it the feelings of utter despair and blackness one suffers. The times you just want to hide away from the people you know and love, the incredible highs and the crashing lows, and the times when you feel nothing at all - no emotions whatsoever.
Yes thank you.
Its like describing colors to a blind person:
